Also, my uncle graduated from Cornell a few years ago, i don't know if this counts as a legacy?

Assuming an average essay and recommendations, what are my chances? Also, do you think that getting ~150 volunteer hours in over the summer would help make up for my poor GPA? Thanks!

Your grandfather doesn’t count as legacy. GPA is far too low. Pre-med is tough. Thus, you have very low chances… Cornell is a very high reach for you, unless you have major hooks like URM or first generation. Other than that, if you go to a very competitive prep school where the valedictorian has a UW GPA of 3.5… then maybe it is a low reach… but you got to be in the top 10%.

Your GPA is really brining you down. A college will look at that and question whether you’re ready to handle that school’s course load. While volunteer work looks good on an application, that doesn’t really tell them anything about your academic aptitude. If you’re looking for something to make up for your GPA, do something academic.

Besides that, I don’t see much that stands out in your application.

Your uncle going to Cornell isn’t legacy, and probably isn’t worth mentioning.

U Chicago seems a bit out of your league. Although it’s perhaps the best top 20 school for forgiving low GPAs (they like effort), you don’t have anything otherwise that says you’re committed to academics like say, self teaching yourself a couple of APs and getting 5s, or dual enrolling at a nearby college.

Tufts is still quite a reach

Boston University seems right up your alley

GPA is pulling you down friend. BUT the trend is what really matters. Improve your ACT to atleast a 34 or a 35 to increase your chances dramatically for Cornell ED.

30 hours volunteer work?!? You should do A LOT more. Volunteer work will help you immensely. Go to a Blind Men’s place and help them out. GO to a Nursing home and help them out.

Cornell would be , at present, a high - mid reach for you. Even with ED. Geneseo will be a match.

You will definitely get into Colgate, but for Cornell you need a higher GPA and something really special on your extra circulars, but definitely apply because you may be surprised.
