Chances at CSUF?

Hey there, I just had a question about my chances of getting into CSUF or other schools. I went through a bad time sophomore year with a controlling ex and my grades suffered majorly. My overall ending GPA is a 2.69, and I got a 1690 on my SAT. Do I have a chance? I'm a California resident in the San Bernadino county. If I retake my SAT for a higher score would it help? Someone told me I should schedule an interview and explain why my grades sophomore year were so low. Any help?!?

Most of the CSUs use eligibility-based admission. You MUST have all the A-G requirements <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU; and at least a 2.0 GPA with a C or better in all A-G courses. Then they use a slding scale with the SAT or ACT - the higher your GPA, the lower your SAT or ACT can be, and the lower your GPA, the higher your scores must be [CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Eligibility Index - California Residents](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>GPA Calculator | CSU) . If your GPA is 3.0 or higher, you don’t even need the ACT or SAT. Some of the CSUs offer an advantage to eligible applicants living in their service area admitting them first, and then they take all the remaining eligible applicants and starting at the most qualified they admit their target number (which will be far more than their target class, because they know all accepted applicants will not attend - only a percentage will). Most of the CSUs don’t consider ECs and I doubt you can get an interview, because they aren’t offered.

As far as explaining your grades as being a result of boyfriend trouble, I doubt that would be considered unless there was a situation involving a restraining order or a police report - just about every high schooler has had boyfriend or girlfriend trouble…
