Hi, I am just starting the college application process and have a question about my chances at Dartmouth ED. I am trying to take a realistic approach. Obviously it is a tough school, but I would love some input.

Although they recalculate GPAs mine is a 3.6

First time SATs: 2140
-790 writing, 11 on essay
-700 critical reading
-650 math

I am probably going to get it up to a 2220 at least.

My parents are both Dartmouth Alumns

I have great extra curriculars and a host of leadership positions that are different and show committment
My essays are going to be unique, well written

Have your parents donated any significant amounts of money to the school? 100K or greater? If so I think you are in like sin. Other than that I really can’t say yes or no as both your parents are alums and may know the right people who work in the right places to get you in. Somewhere between 30% chance and 100% chance.

chances are not great with that gpa (unless you attend a nationally-known/ranked HS). But definitely worth a shot. Any boost from legacy status only works in ED.

I do go to an extremely comeptitive HS, 5th public school in the state of MA
Hopefully that helps?
IS there a big defference between their calculated GPAs and HS ones?

I was admitted ED to Dartmouth this past December.
My SAT at the time was 2320 (now 2400) and my GPA at the time was a 3.78 UW (now 3.82 UW) from a top 20 prep school.
I was also a double legacy (father + grandfather).

I would definitely apply ED to Dartmouth. Also did both your parents attend as undergraduate students, graduate students, both, or some combination of the two?

senior grades are too late for ED decisions, which come out in the second week of December. But they will count if you are deferred into the RD round.

And the 5th most competitive HS in MA is only gonna cut it if your HS routinely sends a 3.6 to an Ivy. What is your rank?

Look at it this way, once you factor out the recruited athletes, something near 40% of the Dartmouth class is Val & Sal. And, of course, 90+% are easily in the top decile.

btw: The standard at our California HS is 5/6 AP’s senior year for those who desire an Ivy/Stanford education.

Is your 3.6 GPA weighted or unweighted?
If you apply ED to Dartmouth chances are they will not review your 1st semester grades. In some cases they ask for first quarter grades, but 1st quarter grades aren’t usually factored into your cumulative GPA.

My 3.6 is unweighted, and if it was weighted Aps would push it up a bit. (I have an A+ in an APUSH this year)
However, I was told Dartmouth does not do weighted GPAs because basically all of their condidates take all honors.

Hmm,
we don’t rank, but I am top 10%

my school does not routinely send people wit 3.6 to ivies (dartmouth specifically), however people with 3.4/5 from my school have gone to Brown (although Brown appears very different and more random in terms of admission)

One more thing; From anyones knowledge would this school put a focus on transcript? (which helps)
Freshman year screwed my GPA over because of the classes i took/how well I did in them, and typially, freshman year is not considered all as much?
