Chances at Duke and Northwestern?

GPA: 3.77/4.0 (unweighted, no weighted available)
Rank: top 13% -> 45/350ish (this is also unweighted, but I've took the most rigorous course load). School is competitive- sends 15-20 students to ivies/t-20 schools each year
SAT: 2310-> 800M, 750 CR, 760 W
SATII:720 Math II, 710 Physics (can't retake, but shouldn't break my app...)

ECs: Few clubs and sports here and there. Captain of robotics team, research lab intern for 2+ years (getting rec as well), publish/coauthor on paper (related to CS/engineering/robotics), etc.

I know my GPA/rank isn't very high, I had a 3.6 freshman year, but 4.0s Sophomore and Junior year. I'm working on my essays, any hope that they might counterbalance a lowish GPA (my SATs are on the higher end as well).

Ok, I'm not sure whether to apply to Trinity or Pratt (my subject tests and overall numbers seem low but I have more engineering related ECs). I'd go for Computer Science if I applied to Trinity. Any suggestions?

For Northwestern, definitely applying to McCormick

The GPA isn’t really the greatest, but the SAT score is very strong. I would apply to Pratt if engineering is where your interests lie. I think Duke would take into consideration the strong background in engineering-related ECs, even if the subject tests aren’t 750+ (they’re still pretty good).

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket though, since both of these schools are very selective. Make sure you have some safeties. The weakest aspect of your app is probably the GPA, but since you have a strong upward trend you may be able to compensate. I think you’ve got a decent chance.

Yeah, I have a few safeties. Just wanted to make sure that I’m at least in contention for a shot at being admitted.

How is your gpa only a 3.77? Considering you had one year of 3.6 and two of 4.0, wouldn’t that equal out to a 3.87ish… Have you taken less classes sophomore and junior year than you did freshman year?

Either way, your gpa is the only thing holding you down considering your class rank doesn’t really make up for it. Admissions are holistic though; you definitely have a shot.

I can only really speak about duke, since I’m applying there ED. They get 22000 applicants and accept 3000. There will be a large number with perfect GPAs and great test scores and ecs. Obviously you are going to be at a disadvantage. That being said, you still have a shot! You really need to write great essays, and hope for the best. You have a shot but its definitely a reach. Good luck!
