chances at Duke ED??

I am a rising senior and I am absolutely in love w/ Duke, and it is my first choice. Unfortunately my junior year was really bad because of family issues, medical issues, etc. Here are some things about me:

-I am Hispanic

-I attend the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, which is just about the best public high school in the nation. Most top universities use a different scale to evaluate students from my school because it is so rigorous and our GPA's would be much higher at a normal school. Also, we tend to have 20+ students attend Duke every year. We also receive special diplomas :)

*note: all of our courses are automatically honors and taught an AP level.

-GPA: 3.72 (i know it is quite low!)

-AP's: German, US History, Biology (this year), BC Calc, Government, English (next year)

-SAT 1: 800 M 690 W 600 CR. I am taking them again so that I can improve critical reading

-SAT 2: I took math 2, german, and biology, but I don't know the scores yet

-EC's/awards: Historian of Hispanic Alliance sophmore year, President Junior year and next year, tutoring, mentoring, orchestra (all four years), active member of black student union and diversity committee, finalist for hispanic heritage essay contest, ventures scholar, national honor roll, latin dancing, national german examination top 10% two years, most outstanding musician freshman year.

-all seniors do a senior tech lab research project, I will be doing an oceanography research project

I spoke w/ my counselor and she seems to think I have a pretty good chance, I'm sure my essays and teacher recs will be amazing. Let me know what you think!

I should also mention that this summer I will be working with the Quest program, which is an enrichment program for minorities that prepares them for the admissions test for my HS. Also, my dad didn't go to college and my mom went to community college. Oh, and I am a Virginia resident.

that **** is bull**** your school is not any better than other schools dont give any god**** excuses

waterboy, THJSST is regarded as one of the best, if not the best, public high school in the country.

That being said, I think you would receive much better feedback from THJSST's guidance department, or from graduating peers who have gone through THJSST and done well in the admissions game.

well, what school do you go to?

I think since you are a URM and have decent SAT scores and kinda good gpa duke is a slight reach.

3.7, if UW, is not that low for Duke (w/ good SAT scores of course)...

If TJ's grading policy is what you say, in fact, GPA will definitely NOT be the thing that keeps you out of Duke.

Good luck!

any other schools that you all suggest? I'm thinking about majoring in biology, hopefully going into med school. I like medium-large schools, and I'm not too in love with the northern schools.

good medical school in the south is University of Florida where they have a new hospital called shands and a new department for biology and biochemists. With your stats its a match.

i e-mailed one of Duke's admissions officers and from what she told me, you all are a lot tougher than the actual admissions officers.

obviously... its CC...

haha.......

you emailed a Duke adcom asking about CCers?
cool

and yes, most CCers are

yea, the woman told me that gpa is really important your senior year, and that my EC's were actually really good. when i compared myself to some other cc people and their comments, i seriously doubted my chances of getting into college - period.

one other question, how is one considered a "first generation" student? my dad didn't graduate hs, and my mom had me after hs and then in her late 20's she went to a community college for a couple of years. i'm just confused on what my "status" would be. oh, and what exactly is "low-income"..what i mean is, what is the cut-off?

........bump.......

.................bump................ please respond, i'm dyyyying here :)
