Chances at Duke ED

Chances at Duke ED
Can anyone help me out, I haven't been recieving much feedback, but my number 1 choice since I was little has been Duke and I want a lot of feedback of my chance.

Location: Large High School in South Carolina of around 2300 students

Ethnicity: Indian (I love my origins, but not when it comes to applying….)

Performance:
GPA: UW: 4.0 W: 5.2
Rank 3 out of 660 (I hope I can improve, but I predict the large class will slowly dwindle)
AP Classes: Human Geography, World History, Statistics, Calculus AB, English Language, US History, Government, Computer Science, Biology, Physics, English Literature, Economics, Phsycology, Spanish

Standardized Testing:
Now here is my weakness, I have taken the Sat and Psat when they have not really counted, but it seems that I always do poorly in them. No matter how hard I try I can't seem to do well.
I took the SAT II World History and got a 610
As far as Sat's and Act's I am taking a Kaplan course this summer but I am still very worried that my SAT's can really hurt me.
I know it's hard for you to evaluate my chances w/o my Sat's but can u tell me what a good minimum score I need to aim for to have a really good chance of getting in?

Extra-Curriculars:
Speech and Debate: Event Chair last year, Co- Captain this year, National Forensic Leage National Qualifier, Outstanding Distinction Degree 1000 pts, All-American.
I really want to emphasize leadership in everything I do, especially with Speech and Debate. My event is Student Congressional Debate and it teaches you so much leadership and speaking abilities, I have noticed so much improvement. Furthermore the National Forensic League emphasizes the leadership that comes with student congress

Youth in Government: Youth Attorney General of SC and running for Youth Governor of SC this year. Helped change YIG program.

Boy Scouts of America: Several Leadership positions b/c it is mandatory. Eagle Scout

Academic Team: National Qualified Team Freshman Year, Captain

National Honor Society and Beta Club: Running for Leadership positions next year for both.

Youth Leadership Program of Greenville Chamber of Commerce: This is the first year they have started this program so I don't know much about it, but it is very selective and I have been admitted

Crew leader at Summer Job for 3 years

Started my own business: Built websites for a few companies and fixed and built computers with friends

ALL IN ALL I REALLY WANT TO EMPHASIZE LEADERSHIP, CHANGE, AND SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. I ALSO WANT TO STRESS I HAVE THE DRIVE TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL. I don't want to go to these schools just so I can come out and have a good job, I want to bring about change.

Can anyone please help me out... Especially regarding Sat's I dont want people to tell me to study and do good, I have heard it on and on. I want someone to tell me the scores that I need that will give me a good chance. I have time to improve but frankly I am really worried about the SAT.

There's no SAT score that you need to get into Duke. Still, since you really seem to want an answer, I will say that 2100-2150 is probably a good goal.

It's great that you know exactly what you want to emphasize in the application, and that it sounds consistent with everything else about you. Definitely do that. Your class rank is great. ECs count a lot at Duke. Yours have focus. It will look great if you get some of the leadership positions. You may be one of the people who do far better on the ACT than on the SAT. You sound like that type.

would a 30 on the ACT be a decent score

A 30 on the ACT is not a good score for a school on Duke's level. Scores of 32 and up would be good. You may just have to hope that they classify you as not a good test-taker. A 30 will be seen as mediocre, not terrible, so you may get by. However, Duke is really competitive, so find alternatives. It is really meaningless to bond with a particular school anyway. You should target a category of school, such as large non-urban university with a good social life.

Wade Hampton?

Great grades, btw

Reasonable score for Duke would be 2200 plus or 33 plus ACT. Keep in mind you're in the uber competitive Asian pool which requires higher scores than any other group.

i disagree, the sat's and acts are losing strenght, if you have excellent EC's you will in most cases be better off than having an excellent sat score.

You're kidding, right? The average scores just keep going up.You need it all for Duke level schools, just look at the stats forer accepted students. The low ones are athletes.

yea but clearly ec's outweigh your sat... its been on the news for the past month or so... thats the exact point the avg are going up b/c the test is just a scam and colleges are realizing it some more than others. im not saying u can get in w/ a 1200 into duke im saying in the upper 13's to 14's

What papers have you been reading? Both the president of Reed and the former pres of Emory recently came out saying how important SAT scores are in this age of high school grade inflation. For the colleges that are not requiring SAT scores it's a game to increase applications.

so what if its a game... that doesnt compromise the fact that the sat's are not as important as they were a year ago or years before... Of course the sat's are important as you, but not as important as they were before... If you've been watching the news or reading any magazines you would know this. High school grade inflation isnt even a matter of question b/c colleges have their own system of awarding you certain grades. its the unweighted gpa that counts... if you want to know what papers i have been reading you should look to newsweek and us news as well as cbs nightly news about a week ago.

If a college doesn't know your school well, the SAT score is a way to help them understand where you stand when compared to the applicant pool. SAT averages keep going up at all top colleges.

Why is it everyone believes their weakness is the one thing colleges overlook?

suze and bobby...always the prophets of doom.

nmehta4, don't worry too much. Those two love to discourage everyone from applying to top schools.

I do have to agree that you need a decent standardized test score. Definately not a 2200 and a 33 though. My brother got in RD with a 31 last year with no apparant hook.

yea i agree they are to prophets of doom... of course the aveg. keep going up im not denying that. and they always will keep going up... there not gonna go down. im saying that you cant refute the fact that they arent as huge in admissions anymore.. the avg. for getting into a top skool that are posted on this website by people like suze and bobby are skewed... stop discouraging people with terrible statistics.

nmehta4, at least do your research if you want to really discuss the issues. Of course the averages will go down, we are in the middle of a boomlet that will die in a few years. I'm not trying to discourage you from applying, I'm just saying that if a 610 is the only score you're willing to put into print, you won't get in.

u still dont understand, the 610 is the only score i have and that is from an SATII. and i am doing the research and im sure you are too... but if you are then u must be placing incorrect statistics all over the website cuz like i said a lot of the things you are saying are inaccurate. you cant say if an individual will get in to a certain skool, you can only approximate their chances but if you constantly say there sat scores are too low to get in than you are inaccurately presenting a student with their chances. stop your mad obsession w/ the sat and actually understand and interpret the true stats.

nmehta4, your knowledge can't begin to compare with Suze's. Dream on.

lol im not here to compare my knowledge to anyone else's im here learn about college b/c i will be applying in the near future. im just pointing out that the knowledge of suze in regards to the SAT is very much flawed... either she is posting incorrect statistics knowingly or misinterpreting the information she is reading. if newsweek and/or us news are correct which i do believe so than i have no reason to believe otherwise. my dream isnt to become more knowledgeable than suze, b/c apparently i have a life rather than coming on this site and posting every second of hte day... my dream is to get into the skool i want to.

a little late, but
OOOOH BURRNN.
