My essays should be good... I've had to deal with a head-injured mother for 6 years (car accident)

Honesty about my chances would be appreciated....

Thanks,
MrHarris

your ec's are very good.....it's possible.

Duke's average ACT is 32.5, so you are lacking in the standardized test department. However, your ECs look quite good, so it definitely is possible. I am applying to Duke RD as well, but I plan on putting more stress on music (regional festivals, etc.). Good Luck!!!

Duke's ACT range is 29-34 so I think I'm at least in the ballpark... I'm more concerned about the class rank hurting me. I'm getting rocked by weaker students in that department. Thanks guys (and girls) keep em coming...

I think you'll get in, three kids got into Duke the same year from my school... you have good standardized test scores

My school isn't exactly an ivy breeding ground. Most of the top students each year choose free tuition at state schools rather than attempting any kind of selective college. Since there are so few students that go for the elite it is making my application process a little harder to gauge.

If you can get your ACT score up a little (or try the SAT), I think you will have a great shot. Even though 30 is in Duke's ACT range, it is towards the bottom in a pool where athletes, URMs and legacies usually make up the bottom. Do you think you will be top 10% after first semester? That would really help...

The top 10% of my class are all valedictorians... all of them... Its frustrating not having weights, but I'll spare you the rant about the injustices of the system. The class rank/ACT combo was the primary reason for the thread. I was not sure how those things would affect my admission status. My guidance councelor said she would explain my situation, but I'm still anxious about the effects of the rank.
