Duke: Reach

Now, what’s your matches? Is UNM even an option for a safety?

I’m applying to UNM just in case, but I’ve worked so hard in high school with the dream of going out of state. I think I will also apply to Johns Hopkins,Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, UT Austin, and U of Utah (which is under WUE).

If you want to take advantage of legacy at Duke, ED at Duke Pratt. Duke has two undergraduate admissions offices; the one for BiomedE is Pratt.

JHU: Reach
U Utah: Safety
GA Tech: Match
UT Austin Cockrell: Match/High match
TAMU Dwight Look: Low match/Match

@Catria Thank you! I am thinking about retaking the ACT again in September becuase I know I can raise my math section and maybe reading. Do you think that will help my chances. Also, the only reason I’m worried about applying ED is I’m afraid Duke won’t offer me enough Financial Aid becuase my family makes about $200,000 a year combined, and my sister is still in HS which already costs them about $13,000 per year.

I think you’re a high match for Duke, especially because you’re valedictorian of your class AND a URM from New Mexico. If you apply ED to Duke, all the more reason for your acceptance to come through.

Hopkins might be a little trickier because of the ACT score if you apply to BME. I’ll call it a reach whether or not you apply ED or RD because that’s by far their most competitive program they offer. If you can raise your ACT to 33 or higher, then JHU BME becomes a low reach/high match.

G-Tech, UT-Austin are matches, TAMU is a safety. Yay!

@movieman wow thank you!! I think I will take the ACT again in September and October just to be safe. I know I can raise Math and Reading I just dont know if I can match the scores I got before in English, Writing and Science haha but thank you so much!

I have to agree with movieman here. You are definitely a high match ED (just barely reluctant to say match) because of the New Mexico/ Valedictorian/ URM triple threat combo. In the early round, colleges are looking to round out the class and will jump on an ED candidate that is geographically rare, and of ethnicity that is underrepresented and that is certainly qualified academically as well (try to bring up that ACT though). Another thing you could try to do is to some more academic ec’s since most of what you have is volunteer work, which is fantastic in its own right, but just try to broaden your activities a bit.

If she was a Trinity applicant then OK, I could have said high match, but Pratt, while having a higher acceptance rate, has higher mid-50% stats.

But Pratt can become a high match at 33.

You have a good shot at Duke but if you don’t get in it’s because of your testing scores. A 2200 SAT or 33 ACT would make acceptance a sure thing.

Hey thanks for chancing me! You have a very good resume. I think you have a solid chance at Duke. If you apply ED you’re probably in, and extremely good chances if you raise your ACT 1 or 2 points. Ga-Tech and UT-Austin are matches, and TAMU is a safety as others have said. Hopkins is the real reach here, because Hopkins BME is brutal, and has very competitive admissions. However, if you write good essays and raise those tests scores a little, you’re definitely a competitive applicant. Good luck!
