strong essay and very strong recommendations

I think you stand a good chance of making fordham but NYU is going to be tough. That’s definitely a reach. Why do you want to come all the way to NY just for those two schools? Its a long way and I’m sure there are some good in state california schools that are just as good!

Not familiar with Fordham, but based on your gpa and sat scores, NYU is probably a no-go for you :(. I’m assuming you’ve applied to Cal States and/or UCs?

don’t plan on going to state schools or any UCs

looking for small-medium size private school in a big city

I believe NYU is a BIG school

NYU-No.
Fordham-Probably.
If you look at my post and check out my stats, you can compare cause I got in there.

I think Fordham is a reach also with your stats. Look at the thread under Fordham discussions that talk about the EA decisions. Students posted their stats and you can compare yourself with those who got admitted vs. deferred.

NYU–Slight Reach to Reach
Fordham–Match to Slight Reach, but closer to Slight Reach (you will probably be waitlisted, but they take almost nobody off the waitlist)

In my view, you would get into Fordham for sure if your SAT CR + M scores were a combined 200 points higher, but I think the total you have makes your application “iffy”. Like I said above, I consider you closer to Slight Reach (meaning you will probably not get in), but it will depend an awful lot on the other stuff you send in, like recommendations, info on volunteer efforts (they count this a lot at Fordham), your work within your community, and any athletic and academic competitions you have participated in.

P.S. My own son was waitlisted at Fordham and did not get in off the waitlist. His GPA was very slightly lower than yours, but his SATs were about 120 points higher.

You have some interesting ECs, but unfortunately your SATs or GPA will not cut it for NYU. I’m currently a freshman there and my SATs were about 400 points higher than yours :frowning: Fordham could be a possibility, but it might be tough.

Fordham seems to be within reach for you, but NYU looks like a no. Are those the only two you’re applying to? Because I’m sure there are loads more (great) schools out there that fit your profile.
