Chances at Georgetown, ND, BC, UChicago. All EA

I promised myself as a Junior that I would never post here, but I'm applying now, and, well, things have changed.

Here goes:

ETHNICITY

White Male from Florida

ACADEMICS

National Merit Semi (215)
AP Scholar w/ Distinction
Mu Alpha Theta
Honor Roll (11, 12)

gpa: 9.11/12 unweighted (very competitive independent school but I'm aware that this is low) Junior and Senior year are all A's but Fresh and Soph were a mix of A's and B's (Heavy on the B's). Our school doesn't rank and I'm very thankful for that.
Very rigorous course load. Will have completed 8 ap classes by the end of this year (Passed 10 Exams)

Scores
SAT I: (CR 740) (M 750) (W 770)
SAT II: (Math II 800) (Lit 720) I know Gtown requires 3. I'm taking another in January. Will send it if I get deferred.

ATHLETICS

Varsity/Club Swimmer all four years. Captain this year. Coaches Award Last year. All-county last year. State qualifier all 4 years. State finalist last year.

EXTRA CURRICS

President and Founder of Political Action Club (Only in 12th grade though)
I founded this because our school didn't have a political club in election year. Made this clear in app. Wanted to avoid "Resume Padding" perception.

VOLUNTEER

Overtown Youth Center Tutor (10th, 11th)
Breakthrough Miami Swim Instructor (11th, 12th)
St. Judes Research Center Triathlon Team Captain (all four years) Organized three teams consisting of fellow students each year. Have raised $15,000. The Hospital presented our school with a Plaque on my behalf. My relay won entire event.

WORK

Lifeguard at my school's Summercamp (Summer after 11th)
Started small unnoficial business with two other swimming friends. We lifeguard Private Parties. (11th, 12th)

OTHER

Legacy: My mom and my grandfather (mom's side) both went to Georgetown. Grandfather went to the Medical School though.

Our District Representative is also calling Gtown on my behalf.

Great interview for Georgetown

I appreciate any and all of your insights and good luck to anybody else applying.

bumppp…

bump…

…bump???

I’d say BC’s a match, ND and Georgetown are low reaches, and UChicago’s a reach.

BC: Great chances
ND: Good chances
GW: Decent chances due to your “connections”
Chicago: Reach

Thanks very much Eli and 20more. UChicago swim coach also said he’d “flag” my application. I know it doesn’t do much but it can’t hurt.

One last bump…

Ok first of all, read this post and don’t return until December. You need to relax and just focus on your applications and this point and in December, prepare for regular apps.

Here are comments on your post. They may seem rude, but I would rather be seen as a jerk than you getting denied to these schools:
-I don’t care that you got a 215 on PSAT. All I care about is you are commended. If you include 215 in your application, you will be blamed for being a whiner, too focused on scores, a perfectionist, and embellishing your application. Get over commended and move on. I sucked the day of the PSAT and got neither.

-I don’t care about your weighted GPA, and furthermore I don’t care about your GPA based on 12 points. You are expected to take the most rigorous work load so DO NOT USE THIS AS AN EXCUSE.

-If you are not in top decile (and your school reports deciles/ranks), you should aim lower. It is just that schools are more bent on taking top 10% than anything else in my opinion.

-SAT seems good, but don’t expect that to help you too much. Colleges like seeing people within a certain score rank (32+ for ACT, 2200+ for SAT), but then they move on.

-I like your swimming, but do not stress your application on it by writing essays and listing it as your first EC if you are not being recruited. If you are not being recruited, they care much more about your academic EC passions. That isn’t to say that it isn’t a very nice “for fun” activity that you’ve had success in where you could put it a little lower on the list.

-I’m concerned about your political club. Are you saying that you were only involved in 1 club, and that was 12th grade, and that you made it because nobody else did? Seems weak to me.

-I don’t care you won the event for the fundraiser. Actually, I couldn’t care any less than what I do. However, what I DO CARE ABOUT is that you raised 15,000. Talk about what you did wrong, what you learned, what you saw, and what skills you will bring to college from this experience and this will be the STRONGEST thing on your application when it comes to activities.

Looking at what you have, I think you have good chances. That being said, I would hop off this website and don’t stress yourself. Write those essays on how you have grown academically though swimming and what skills will transcend into college. This is what colleges truly care about.

Relax. Good luck pal.

bump…
