Chances at Getting In?

Hi there! I was wondering if a few of you who are more experienced with college admissions than I am could chance me for UF. Here’s my entire academic history:

I’m in my school’s APC Program, which is the most academically rigorous program available.

9th Grade:
AP Environmental Science(earned a 4 on the exam)-A
APC English 1-A
APC Geometry-A
Spanish 1-A
AFJROTC 1-A
Computing for College and Careers(earned Microsoft Office Specialist Certification and a few state college credits)-A
World History Honors-A
Algebra 2 Honors(taken through FLVS)-B+

10th Grade:
AP European History(earned a 4 on the exam)-B+
AP Biology(earned a 4 on the exam)-A
AP Psychology(earned a 5 on the exam)-A
APC English 2-A
Precalculus Honors-A
Spanish 2-A
AFJROTC 2-A

11th Grade:
AP Calculus AB(earned a 3 on the exam)-A
AP Physics 1(earned a 3 on the exam)-A
AP United States History(earned a 4 on the exam)-A
AP English Language and Composition(earned a 5 on the exam)-A
Pharmacy Technician Training Class(a dual enrollment course I took at a vocational school, counts for all 3 of my electives, upon completion I would be certified as a pharmacy technician in the state of Florida)-4 A’s, 2 B’s

12th Grade(planned classes):
AP Calculus BC
AP Literature
AP United States Government and Politics(one semester)
AP Macroeconomics(one semester)
Chemistry Honors
Pharmacy Technician Training Class(only the first semester, I’ll be finished with it by then)

For the second semester of my senior year, there’s not many options I have in terms of classes. I’ll probably go with all the honors single-semester classes I can take(3).

Now, a little background about myself. I’ve run cross country my sophomore and junior year, JV. In my junior year, I helped found our school’s ultimate frisbee club, and for my senior year I am a leading officer in the club. I am a member of the National Beta Club, and I have a long history of volunteering. I volunteered for my school’s AFJROTC program during my freshman year. I helped out at a local elementary school for most of my sophomore year, and I took an active role in volunteering for Beta Club my junior year. All told, I have over 200 community service hours logged. My PSAT was nothing special, just a 204. I’ve taken the SAT twice, I got a 2050 the first time and a 2080 the second time. Superscored, it would be a 2130. In terms of GPA, I have a 3.9 unweighted and 5.1 weighted. I’ve only gotten 3 B’s in my entire high school career, in AP Euro, Algebra 2 Online(it was tough to keep up with it and my courseload freshman year), and in one segment of my Pharmacy Technician class. I’m ranked 17th in my class of 793, although that’s bound to change once class ranks are recalculated at the beginning of senior year. I’ve been told by the assistant principal that as it stands now, I’m one of the prime choices for salutatorian. I won a national award in the AFJROTC program, although I don’t think it’s anything too special. I have 100 hours of work experience from Walgreen’s, as part of my Pharmacy Technician Training Class. By the second semester of my senior year, I’ll have 300 hours total in work experience from Walgreen’s.

Only my dad works, and his annual income to support a family of 4 is around $60,000-$70,000. My dad has a bachelor’s degree, and my mom didn’t go to college. I’ve met all the requirements for Bright Futures. I plan on majoring in Physics, and applying to UF’s 7 year accelerated BS/MD program.

If you’ve made it this far, I’d like to thank you for sticking with it and reading about my high school career. What do you think my chances are at getting into UF and their 7 year MD program? Also, do you think I’ll get much in the way of financial aid?

Thanks a lot!

If it makes a difference, I’m an Asian male, Florida resident.

The Junior Honors Medical Program?

“Application to the JHMP occurs early in the spring semester of the student’s second year of college enrollment.”

Much of your application will be based on how well you’re doing at UF, not so much high school.

Check out the Average Net price at UF, by income:

http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?s=FL&ct=1&ic=1&pg=3&id=134130#netprc

Then run the UF Net Price Calculator (in the above link). It will give you some idea of cost. If cost is an issue, you should also apply to USF and UCF as safeties. Both schools have accelerated medical programs (both have med schools), honor colleges, and would offer you substantial merit. They are both on rolling admissions, so you could get an acceptance (and merit) in October, which makes waiting for UF’s announcement in February a bit less stressful!

Good Luck!

Yes, the JHMP is what I was talking about, and I just mentioned that because it’s what I plan on doing if I get in.

Thanks for your help! When you say “substantial merit,” do you mean free tuition, a full ride…? I’ve already started my application to UCF, and I know I’ll get in because of their Top Ten Knights program, but I’m worried about the cost.

Thanks again!

You don’t need the “Top Ten program” to get into either of those schools, your stats are more than strong enough.

With your stats, you likely would be offered at least $3 to $5K a year in merit scholarship (the Pegasus Scholarship*
Gold, Bronze, Silver). In addition to other scholarships, such as the Provost scholarship. Do the research and apply as needed.

It’s not that uncommon for students to pick USF or UCF over UF, simply based on the merit scholarships (and honor colleges).

Also think about applying to schools like Vanderbilt, Duke, etc. These schools wouldn’t offer merit scholarships, but they would offer need based grants. Use the net price calculator for each school, to get an idea of how much they may offer. These schools are much more selective, but sometimes offer better need based aid. If you do think about applying to these schools, you may want to re-take your SAT to boast it a bit higher.

Still, these schools (the Vanderbilt’s and Dukes), even with good financial aid, may prove to be too expensive. However, it may be worth submitting an application and finding out…

Good Luck!

Awesome, I will definitely look into those!

Thank you again for your help!!
