chances at harvard/princeton/george washington/others?

i'm a high school senior and i'm wondering what my chances are at the following colleges:

harvard
princeton
george washington
sarah lawrence
wellesley
georgetown
brown
sweet briar

i got a 2380 on the SAT and i have an unweighted GPA of 4.0. i'm ranked 1st in my class of 366.

in my junior year, i took 5 AP classes (english language, us history, government and politics, ap biology and ap latin) and scored a 5 in all but latin, which was a 4.

in senior year, i'm taking 6 AP classes (english literature, calculus BC, physics, chemistry, european history and german).

i have pretty decent extra-curriculars, but i don't think they're anything spectacular - i'm on the student council (president), school newspaper, chess club, debate team, basketball team, model UN society and german club. oh, and i'm a national merit semi-finalist.

i spent the summer before my junior year studying at the goethe institute in germany (language immersion) and last summer, i helped build houses in uganda with habitat for humanity (the global village program).

can anybody help me out? my take on this is that i'm pretty non-spectacular - good grades, average ecs - nothing that would make adcoms sit up and take notice.

what do you guys think? how good are my chances? what can i do to improve?

your sat II scores ?

oops, forgot to put that in the main post, lol.

sat ii: math - 800, us history - 800, literature - 800

This is stupid. You already know the answer.

You're a lock everywhere except Harvard and Princeton, which are too unpredictable. Of course, you have as good a chance as anyone there.

it's harvard and princeton that i'm mainly worried about getting into - harvard is my first choice, and i've wanted to go there for years, so yeah, i'm worried because the overall calibre of harvard applicants is extremely high, and since they only accept around 10% of the people who apply, i'm thinking just how good do the accepted folks have to be?

college apps make me paranoid, lol.

I don't see how much better they can be than a 4.0, valedictorian with a 2380 and 800s on the SAT IIs...not to mention excellent ECs.

Seriously, I pity people like you, with no self-confidence.

well, it's pretty tough to be confident when your entire future is riding on what these colleges think of me. plus, my parents have been going crazy at me over apps - if i get rejected from any of these schools, they will totally kill me (mom last night: "emily, a rejection letter is just another way of saying you're a failure!").

so, yeah, self-confidence is pretty hard to come by right now.

Look back at the 'who got in' posts on each school's discussion board. You will see several 1600 SATs with great SAT IIs and GPA that were rejected. If you and your family truly believe that a rejection letter from these schools equals failure, you need to get into family counseling now. The simple fact is the acceptance rate is under 10% and someone will get left out. First rule of college applications, LOVE YOUR MATCH AND SAFETY SCHOOLS.

Exactly. I pity people whose parents think that a rejection from Harvard or Princeton equals failure. They will never have enough self-confidence to really live up to the education they receive.

It seems to be a major problem with many people on this board. It's just sick.

I think this discussion points out a major problem I see a lot on this forum - that lots of students and parents can only picture one reality - an ivy league or close to it. Believe me - college is only one component to becoming a successful individual (and success takes many forms). I hope you and your parents will look for what really fits you as a person when making higher education plans. Especially keep in mind what I read on a forum yesterday - build your list from the bottom up.

Personally, I think you're in at Harvard and Princeton if your essays really shine. Since you say you don't stand out through your EC's, your writing will really have to set you apart. I'm sure if you can pull this off, you'll get in.

Yep, essays will do it for you. Just come across with a stronger personality (more confident).

I can't say you are a sure bet at Harvard or Princeton.

There will be many other kids with similar stats to yours, but I do commend you for your accmplishments.

I think:
harvard 70% chance
princeton 90% chance

i blame it all on her parents....azn ...rite?

Trust me, your future is NOT riding on what these colleges think of you. I know someon who graduated from Harvard last year who is working on a $22k annual salary..you have shown that you are a smart individual, you dont NEED harvard to further yourself. Chillax, you will get into a great school I have no doubt about this.

No one has those odds at those schools. Go read the admitted threads.

"No one has those odds at those schools."

I was thinking about this....What about people on olympiad teams?

There are plenty of IMOers (in my opinion is this is most competitive international high school competition) who get rejected
