Chances at Honors College and Merit Aid

Hi I am currently a junior from New York and a prospective Class of 2016 applicant. I would be interested in going on the pre-pharmacy track.

ACT: 33
SAT: 1360/1960
SAT II: US History - 770 and Math I - 740
GPA (Scale of 100): 97ish
Class Rank: 8ish/250

I have a fairly rigorous schedule and a lot of good extra credits including class president all four years.

What are my chances of getting into the honors college and getting merit scholarships? Also do I have a chance at getting early acceptance into the pharmacy program? And my last question would be if submitting my SAT scores would hurt my chances (I have taken them once and plan to once more but I am not expecting a huge increase). Thank you in advance for your help!

Not sure how they look at the ACT (yours seems quite good) but by SAT standards you’ll need to improve. Take it again and get over 1400 superscore. The average incoming UHC freshman CR+M SAT was 1457 for your info. Otherwise looks good.

an ACT of 33 is equivalent to and SAT of 1460. Unless there are particular sections of the SAT that you did better on, there is no point in sending SAT score.

(according to the admissions presentation that I attended, PITT “superscores” individual sections of ACT and SAT on a mix and match basis. I am not sure how they do that.)

Make sure that you submit an essay to be considered for honors and scholarships; also an activity resume is a good supplement to send.

good luck!

Thanks for the help! I really appreciate the advice.

For the Honors College you need at least a 32 on your ACT, and you seem right on track for that!

You also have to be in the top 5% of your graduating class (along with the 32 ACT which you have).

Generally your counselor’s rec letter will include what percentage you are. You can always ask and find out.

Also, if you do apply & get Honor’s College (and have a really good HS GPA (like 3.7+)), you’ve got about a 90% chance of getting some sort of merit aid from them. Almost everyone I know got at least a half-tuition (if not full) scholarship from the UHC (including myself!) .

My DS High School doesn’t rank and he was accepted to UHC and got a full tuition scholarship with invitation to apply for Chancellors. He is going to be a Sophomore this year. So rank not one of the most important criteria.

I would just like to point out, that, admission into the Honors College does not preclude elegibility to taking these honors classes that are offered. Admission into the honors college can still be offered after you are admitted, provided you keep a 3.25 GPA. Also, even if you are not admitted, you may still take the classes after talking with the advisors and the professor.

They might recalculate your ACT score to make it higher. My composite score was 30, but the average of my math and English scores was 32.
