lazear - I really think you need to add some safeties to your list. The Ivies should never be counted on as safety schools, and your SAT scores are below many of the applicants who got deferred in the early rounds. So right now I would focus more on finding some realistic matches/safeties to quickly apply to, rather than try to determine your chances for your reaches.

Hopkins is selective, but the ivy's are insane.. they deny people with 2400's, 4.0s, the works because they don't fit the enviroment they are trying to create. "I think you have a really great shot at Harvard, Princeton, and Cornell. Your stats definately measure up to those three, however, Hopkins is probably a bit of a reach. You are well-below the average for most students there and will probably get rejected." Please, please do not apply to harvard as a safety. Harvard is a reach for everyone, no matter what the statistics. For the perfect student, Harvard is maybe a match/reach. I would retake the chemistry SAT II, and get it above 650 if you want a better shot at JHU. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Lazear, I wouldn't be saying that there are still the Ivies if you don't get into JHU. HP isn't exactly scrambling to accept people with 2100 SAT. You WILL get rejected by Harvard and Princeton, simply because you overlooked taking the Math 2C and you have a generally low Subject Test score. The only subject test score that is in the range of these candidates is your chemistry, and that score isn't at the higher end either.

You have a solid GPA and a good class rank but you are in a tiny class so you'll just squeeze in at the top 10%.

Scale: 10-very likely 1-almost no chance
JHU-2
Harvard-1
Cornell-1
Princeton-1

You NEED to apply to more realistic schools. Jimmy's list looks great and you will probably get in to at least one of those schools. I'd be expecting rejection letters if I were you. Sorry if I sound harsh but you'll need to scramble to get applications done for more realistic schools.

Agreed with karot and JIMMY - you really don't have that much of a chance. I didn't mean to patronize; I simply wanted to point out that JHU is not as selective as the trinity of HYP.

Why didn't you apply ED there?

Yeah, applying ED would have been the only chance of getting into Hopkins, but you should try RDing everywhere else.

I'm in the same boat as Optimist, I don't want to the bearer of bad news, but add some more schools to your list man.

I don't know if I'm buying some of this advice. I should at least be able to get into the Ivies, Right? Any opinions? I just want some opinions with actual perspective. Thanks again. Keep them coming.

i agree with JIMMY. you have an ok shot at hopkins, very slim to none chance at hyp (sorry for being harsh, but that's how insane the competition is).

and i have no idea where people got the idea that hopkins kids are party animals. i live 20 min away from the campus, did several programs there, and i pretty much know every cornor of the campus so trust me on this. it's a great school and people are friendly, you will find parties but it's NOT a party school by any stretch.

Isn't lazeardreamin' obviously doing this as a joke...why play along with him? Waste of time if you ask me.

But if you really want to go to Hopkins:

Official Stats in 2006:

Number of Applicants: 13863
Admitted: 3689
Admit Rate: 27%
Students Enrolled: 1160

Middle 50%:
Sat Verbal: 650~750
Math: 690~790
Writing: 650~740

lazear - no, you should not "at least be able to get into the Ivies." This may sound harsh, but I highly doubt that you will get in. Your SAT scores are low for Ivy standards, except maybe for Cornell. Harvard rejected one out of every four applicants with perfect 2400/2400, and you only have a 2100 with low SAT II scores (again, many applicants have 800s in most if not all of their subject tests). I don't know if your GPA is weighted or unweighted, but if it is weighted, then your GPA is also low.

I think you need to very quickly do some careful research on the colleges to which you are applying, FIND SOME SAFETIES, and get your applications in before the deadline. Go ahead and apply to JHU and those Ivies, but consider the Ivies big reaches. I know you may not want to hear this, especially now, but you NEED to find some realistic safety schools because there is a very good chance that you might not get accepted into any of those you are currently considering.

"Isn't lazeardreamin' obviously doing this as a joke"

Actually, I was wondering that myself...

Ha, same here.

Whether lazeardreamin' BSing or not, I HIGHLY recommend everyone (particular people think their life'd be over with an Ivy acceptance) to read this Special Edition Report published just this August 2006 on TIME Magazine. I used to the same way, that I could and I MUST get into HYP, but after reading this article, many of my friends (including me) felt very very enlightened and switched to a more "realistic approach." Enjoy.

By the way, the article's titled "Who Needs Harvard?"

Thanks for the article, it was helpful.

Yeah, once you actually step foot into college, you will realize that Hopkins is just as, if not more, competitive than any of those ivies. Too bad you did not apply ED though.

don't bet on getting into Johns Hopkins. It's rough hearing that, I know. I myself have my heart SET on Columbia. or Yale if i get in. Just do your best on the app, and hopefully they like your personality!

Hopkins-slim chance
Cornell-slim chance
Harvard-no chance
Princeton -no chance

if you applied hopkins for ed you probably had a chance but now i think you should retake your sat...some schools still accept jan scores

Well im really desperate, you guys have really turned me on to how tough Harvard is to get into, but after talking to my counselor I realized that Princeton is probably my best bet. He talked to an admissions official and he said its a lock. Thanks for all of the advice guys!
