Chances at Hotchkiss

Hi, I’m applying to boarding school this year (I’m a sophomore now, applying to be a junior), and the only school I’m really worried about getting admitted to is Hotchkiss. If anyone could tell my chances from the information I’ll provide below, that’d be great.

My SSAT scores: not that great, but decent.

Verbal: 767; 92%
Math: 758; 81%
Reading: 713; 79%
Total: 2238; 90%

My transcript is what scares me. It’s not terrible but I’ve had a difficult last couple of years causing my grades to fall dramatically. I probably have ¾ B’s and ¼ A’s. But my school is a private school that is fairly prestigious academically, and maybe they’ll take that into account…maybe…

I do have a lot of extracurriculars though:
Varsity Policy Debate (at one of the most prestigious debate schools in the country)
Junior High and High School Theater (a lot of it)
School Swim-Team
School Cross-Country
Club Soccer
Club Basketball
Tea Club
Human Rights Club
Latino Club
Piano Club
Young Republicans Club
School Literary Magazine (art, and short story)

I also play the piano (10 yrs)
The guitar (6 yrs)
And I sing and take vocal lessons (3 yrs)

I don’t know if this will affect the decision either, but I’m not applying for financial aid.

So, can anyone guess my chances for admission?

you look great! (how can you possibly be doing all those clubs?!!!) but i would be a little bit owrried about the grades.

what sate are you from? how did your interview go? you have a big quantity of ec's, but are you good at that stuff or is it just stuff you're doing to put on the application? how long have you been doing those clubs? what will your recs. be like?

a lot goes into admission, i don't really know better than you. but i think you do have a shot.

Strong candidate due to excellent SSAT, no need for financial aid and Latino status.

NeLLyRaE,

I have not had an interview yet, It's scheduled a littled late (early January), but I'm not particularly worried about the interview.

Well, a lot of the clubs are kind of low key, only meeting once a week or so, but they're still pretty important to me. As for my profficiency at my ECs:

I'm a fairly good debater. I hold a co-championship in a Georgia local Varsity tournament, and a Merit of Excellence from the National Forensics League.

I'd like to think that I'm a good actress since I've been cast in a lot of plays (Fiddler on the Roof and The Importance of Being Earnest were the plays I've had the largest roles in).

I'm an okay swimmer. Not state or national champion material, but I've been on A relay teams for my school and taken 1st place during local meets.

As for the rest of the sports, they were just for fun.

My recs should be sufficient. I get along really well with my teachers, so I expect (and hope) they'll represent me well.

What other schools are you applying to?

why hotchkiss?

I live in Georgia, so my parents want me applying to some relatively local schools: Darlington and Baylor. They're decent schools, but not that great.

I want to go to Hotchkiss because I know someone who goes there, and we have family in Connecticut, so my parents won't freak out too much. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open...

choate's a pretty good school too.... you can apply there too....

wow, your similar to me, I'm applying to hotchkiss too! I'd say you've got a pretty good chance, but I'd be concerned with your GPA, but most boarding schools look for improvement and growth so as long as your "improving" you should be well off.
