Chances at HYPS/top colleges? Will chance back!!

Unfortunately I would be surprised if you got into any of the schools of in the acronym HYPS. SAT score is fairly standard (maybe a little low), GPA is slightly low, ECs are fairly mediocre. You’re asian and applying for financial aid. You are also considered an international (for obvious reasons) which make your chances 10 times harder. If your recs and essays are only decent I unfortunately say that there is almost no chance. Sorry, hopefully I’m wrong! Best of luck and please chance me!: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1270232-what-my-chances-mit-caltech-harvey-mudd.html

For anyone, HYPS is not a guarantee. But based loosely on your grades etc, I’d say you have a decent chance. If you take successful risks in your essays you will give yourself a HUGE advantage.

HYPS is reach for everyone. Your ECs look good, so I think they will really help carry you. I think you have good chances at Cornell, Vandy, Rice, Northwestern, and WUSTL.

Could you chance me back? Thanks!

^Thanks for all the chances everyone! Anyonneeee else?

bumpity bump

Decision day rapidly approaching anxiety bump

Okay final bump

Kids, why do you post when you don’t have a clue? You think the OP will get into HYPDD etc. and Brown is a match?

These schools are all reaches. The OP is an ORM intnl without a hook and no stand out activity. That makes them reaches by definition.

As for solid matches, it’s tough when your intnl and need aid. Most of the schools where you’d be a match, say U’s rated below 25 and LACs below 12 or so, are not need blind to Canadians.

I’ll go with everyone else that’s chimed in and state that HYPS is a full reach for anyone except those that have cured cancer/solved the N =? NP problem/found a way to achieve world peace. As to the rest of the schools, it does depend heavily on how much they look at financial aid, as well as a bunch of other factors, including what school/program you applied to if the college offered a choice (notable example would be UPenn; your chances would range from high match at best for CAS to bleak for Jerome Fisher M&T (same with plenty of other people); which one did you apply to?).

For internationals, all schools except for the few need blind look heavily at need for aid. They have very limited budgets for intnls, and they will use that money to get kids from countries where they don’t have well qualified full pay students applying and for off the charts, national champion stars all of the schools will fight for.

You have the unfortunate case that they get many, many, qualified full pay applicants from Canada. You will also be looked at in the overall Asian pool, where again, they have multiple times the full pays they can accept.

This means you need to be very strategic. Look at schools in the MW and South that don’t see many Asian or Canadian applicants yet are known to be generous to intnls. Kalamazoo, St. Olaf and Davidson come to mind.

Waverly, thank you for the input, I will definitely look into those schools! I am honestly not expecting any acceptances, just hoping for the off chance I get into one of the schools.
CompulsiveGamer, I applied to CAS.
