Chances at HYPS

My brother is going to be an upcoming senior, what would you say his chances are at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford. Is it a sealed deal?

Top-tier private school in the northeast (Yale feeder)
GPA: ~3.85/4 UW (top 5%)
Hardest possible course schedule
SAT: 2340 (800M/740V/800W)
Hispanic
Tri-varsity athlete
Captain of fencing team
3rd in a national physics competition
AP Calc BC in 9th grade (5 on Calc BC AP)
Plays cello for youth symphony orchestra
Plays bass in free time (with a band)

Calc BC in 9th grade. Holy ****!

Nothing's ever a sealed deal at schools like HYPS. That said, I think anyone with those sort of stats has an amazingly good shot.

anytime i see improbable stats + low post count i start to get suspicious...

anytime i see improbable stats + low post count i start to get suspicious...

Why do you care??

nothing is a sealed deal. he looks great on paper. but it's about essays too. what he shows them about himself. stats don't necessarily help with top schools bc they get 10,000 kids with exactly the same #s. it's about what makes the kids with those perfect #s stand out or fade.

umm...what would be the point of making this up

but the fact that you consider my brother's stats improbable seems like he is in good shape haha

why is it improbable? im doing ap calculus in gr 11 and i dropped math for a year

yeah I had the same situation (AB in 10th with no skip)

jnpn, i don't know how long you've been looking at this forum, but people do make things like this up, on a regular basis, and the characteristics of such posts are extremely high scores, vague and borderline astronomical ecs and achievements ("AP Calc BC in 9th grade" most schools don't even offer APs that early, let alone calc bc), and a poster with a low post count, all of which your post has. i'm not saying i don't believe you, and if you are legit your brother has very good chances, but i feel my suspicion isn't unfounded and doesn't warrant an apology. i think that people should look at these threads with a discerning eye before spending their time on an evaluation.

He'll get into one and p.s. taking ap calc bc in 9th grade doesn't make the colleges think that he is hot stuff... might help a little but isn't impressive to college readers

What do you mean most schools "don't offer AP's that early"... it's just a matter of whether or not the school offers the AP. All he had to do was get the OK from the math department to take a class with a bunch of seniors. If a kid has taken all the pre-reqs it shouldn't be an issue.

I think the only thing that was tough was taking Alg II and Trig in middle school because he had to go down the street to the high school for those classes.

Nader, I wouldn't call it a hook either, but the extent to which he is accelerated makes his grades look more impressive. I'm sure it's not something he is going to be listing as an accomplishment -- I just figured it would put his courseload into perspective for chancing purposes.

I have a few questions. Just curious...what math course is he taking this year (assuming that he is taking a course)? Also, does your brother know what he wants to major in? Also, what awards does he have? According to the info that you have given I would say that he has a decent chance. Your brother has done a great job so far. Congratulations to him.

He is doing chaos theory this year and next year I think hes just doing an independent study. He has no idea what he wants to major in, though hes becoming interested in law school (I think it would be a waste of his math skills). I don't know of any awards he won besides the ones I listed, other than national hispanic scholar which just comes with high psat scores.

as far as i know, you can count the freshman that have taken AP classes at my high school on one hand, and i really think that most schools are not as excited about throwing freshmen into APs as you make it seem. i know mine isn't. i can see it being okay if you have taken all of the prerequisites, but for calc bc, at least at my school, that would mean taking alg II in seventh grade. not impossible, but i could count the number of people around here that have ever done it on the same hand with all the fingers cut off. again, i'm not saying i'm not calling you a liar, but my first instinct on threads like these is suspicion.

So...why are you doing this for your brother?

Those SAT's were actually projected. He ended up with a 2310 (800M 760V 750W). Anyone else want to chance him?

Stats + hispanic = In everywhere.
Although I doubt the authenticity of this post.

You think hispanic (panamanian if it matters) will still be a hook for him if we aren't from a financially disadvantaged background?
