Work and Volunteering---
Job/Work Experience: 2 paid summer internships for software development company. I wrote test code for a portfolio optimization web app that assigns weights to individual assets based on stock volatility, risk, and expected returns. Worked past two years as Russian to English translator in large financial company. Now work as part time programmer for the company I interned at.

Volunteer/Community service: 100 to 150 hours. 100 from Northwestern Civic Leadership Institute where I volunteered in impoverished Chicago neighborhoods and took classes that taught students about financial and social inequality. Other 50 are from school clubs including Edufund and NHS.

Summer Activities: 2 paid summer internships in software development. Band Camp for past 4 summers. Northwestern Civic Leadership institute for 1 month last summer.

-Recs-

Teacher Recommendations: Should both be anywhere from above average to great. One is from my math teacher who I had two years in a row and also knew my brother well. Other is from an english teacher who liked me.

Counselor Rec: Honestly have no idea. I go to a very large school and she doesn't know me well. She is also a new counselor since my old one, who i had for the first two years, retired. I'll make sure to give her as much information about me so she can write a good one though.

Additional Rec: It's from my manager at the summer internships I had. He loved working with me and it will most likely be great.

Essays: My essays range from good to very good. None will result in an automatic rejection, and a few stand out. I am not a great writer, though, when looking at some of the other HYP essays.

Intended Major(s): Double major in Math and Computer science, or Math/Economics

I would like an additional perspective on my chances at the schools I posted. I'm probably in the Mid 50% or top 25% for some. Any additional tweaks I can make before I apply to these schools would also be helpful. Thanks!

uchicago-good
MIT-reach
cal tech-low reach
Northwestern-good
Stanford-Low
HYP-low reach
CLC-Always Good

Uchicago/CLC/Northwestern- Match
Stanford/Cal Tech/MIT- low reach
HYP- reach

hi mikhail

You should be a match for all of those a 36 ACT? Yeah…

When I see kids get 36’s, it usually isn’t in all sections. Congrats on that! But unfortunately still a 10 in the writing part! Anyways, MIT/Caltech vs. UChicago have very different educational philosophies, so make sure you know what your goal is for sure. Legacy at UChicago will help, strong GPA/Stats, average ECs/awards/recs means you’re a decent applicant that will likely get into one or more of these schools. Good luck!

^I probably should have specified this:
ACT(single sitting):36 comp 35 M 36 E 36 R 36 S 10 W
ACT(Superscored):36 comp 36 M 36 E 36 R 36 S 10 W

You seem really strong overall, and having that real life experience should help you at MIT, they seem to like kids that do research or real work. HYP are always unpredictable, but I’d say the only thing going against you there, to be perfectly honest, is that you’re a white male going into math and science. You show a good focus in your ec’s as to what you want to do, I’d imagine you’re a lock for UChicago and a solid target for your other schools besides HYP and MIT. You should be fine at CalTech.

P.S. AP Chem is fantastic, it’s my favorite high school course so far!

Your resume is decent at best, and the one thing I’d recommend is not getting cocky, as being white can also add to that. I had a 2390 SAT and 36 ACT (36 in all sections), not to mention a 4.8 GPA in a 4.0 weighted scale, and the president of NHS, and involved in many EC activities (student co, econ club, KIVA) and interned at Northwestern in programming, and got recs from teachers who requested first hand to me that they’d write, but I was still rejected from Uchicago, Northwestern, Princeton, and Harvard. Although I got into Stanford, I consider that lucky myself , and you should consider safeties, such as Arizona, Virginia, Michigan, or whichever state your from, incase you get rejected by all the top notch schools.

-PC

UChicago: low reach (because of EA)
MIT: mid reach (because of EA)
Caltech: mid reach (because of EA)
Northwestern: high match / low reach
UPenn: mid reach
Stanford: high reach
HYP: high reach

Good luck! :)

I don’t see anything special in your resume (at least you are not an asian).

NW: Solid Chances
Penn: Solid Chances but reach
UChicago: EA solid chances but reach
HYPSM: Reach
Cal Tech: Reach

Very good description!!!

While I fully support this person’s advice on applying to state schools as safeties, I don’t agree with the statements made above. You have a great r

bump anyone else?
