hey guys.. this is for my friend..

hispanic junior, IB student

UW GPA: about 2.9
W GPA : about 4.1

OLD SAT: 1310
EC's : very good debater, upcoming CAPTAIN of water polo and swimming
not heavy into clubs or anything so basically kind of low on EC's.. barely any community service as well

one thorn on his side that i see is the fact that he has failed 3 classes so far... and might fail 2 this year..and maybe could fail 1 or 2 next yr, depends on how hard he tries... the reason he has failed some classes is due to his HUGE problem with skipping and cutting class.. other than that, he is a very smart kid, it shows in his SAT which he didnt even study for (literally).. but i dont know how colleges would see this..

can this affect him a lot in the admissions process, despite boasting a fairly high weighted GPA?

he would like to think of ivies as a reach.. or if not univ of florida as a possibility... (more importantly, would UF accept him, because they do like IB students, but would his failed courses cause them to reject him?)..

what do you guys think about these schools, and how will these failed classes affect him?

thanks alot!!

I think his chances are extremely, extremely, extremely low for the Ivies.UF also may be a stretch for him. While UF likes IB students, UF also likes high gpas and high scores, and is among the top 5 in the country for the numbers of National Merit scholars on campus. High stat students turn down Ivies to go to UF because of the generous merit aid.

As is the case with probably most state university, UF is very stat driven, and your friend's stats are low for UF, even when his grades are weighted. I also don't understand how an unweighted 2.9 could become a weighted 4.1. UF recalculates grades using its own weighting system, which is not as generous as your friend's school's.

Stats on UF freshmen, 2004. Since this year even more students applied to college nationwide than did last year, presumably the stats for the freshmen entering this year will be higher.

Based on the below, UF is seeming more like a match, not like a safety school for your friend. In addition, the fact that your friend skips class could be reflected on the Guidance Counselor or teacher's reports, and that would not help your friend.

The college might assume that a student who won't go to high school classes is very unlikely to attend college classes since colleges require more independence and responsible behavior from students.

Whats your friend's rank? Not his GPA.

out of a class of 650-700... probably around 50 would be a fair estimate.. .and the reason his GPA is so high. is due to the high inflation of IB courses which are worth 6 points for an "A"..

As for UF's re-calculated GPA, can you please tell me how it works? because i am at a 4.7-4.8 right now, but i would like to know my friends UF gpa as well as my UF GPA.. thanks

WHat the 6 POINTS wow haha. SO he's in the top 7% with a 2.9 unweighted...

Wow.

But back to the topic. Seriously I think UF is becoming a little stretch and IVy's is a no no unless he somehow is good enough to get an athletic scholarship.

Ivies don't give athletic scholarships.

You can search UF's site to find out how they recalculate gpa.

oops i meant like... how do you say it.

"Good enough water poloer to be accepted into Harvard because he can play for Harvard"

he does play water which would double his sweetness level, but colleges look at attendance records and the fact that he has a problem with cutting and skipping will realy hurt him because it shows that he's not interested in academics and i don't know any school who wants i could who is isn't interested and won't work hard. and p.s. 1310 isn't that amazing of an SAT score, loads of people don't study at all and get a lot better.

1300 is not an amazing score but a decent score. Perhaps he should put UF as a reach school and maybe apply to 2nd Tier (decent schools)

Like Ann Abhor or Austin?!

Ann Arbor or Austin aren't second tier, and it would be hard for the original poster to get into either even if he were residents of those states.

Florida State or other universities in the Florida public system would be schools that could work as match and safety schools. The exception would be New College, which is harder to get into than is UF.

"one thorn on his side that i see is the fact that he has failed 3 classes so far... and might fail 2 this year..and maybe could fail 1 or 2 next yr, depends on how hard he tries... the reason he has failed some classes is due to his HUGE problem with skipping and cutting class.. other than that, he is a very smart kid, it shows in his SAT which he didnt even study for (literally).. but i dont know how colleges would see this.."

Don't count UF as a safety at all. This boy sounds exactly like a wrestler at my school (coincidently also hispanic). He's ranked top in the NATION, but since he didn't want to wrestle in college, all he had was his 3.1 GPA (UW) and a 1250 SAT score. He also failed a class freshman year.

He applied to UF early decision (in-state) and was promptly rejected.

Dude, Michigan-Ann Arbor is not below Florida. Are you crazy? It's ranked one spot below Berkeley for undergrad and has an amazing undergraduate program. It's the number two public school in the country. Stats aside, it produces some pretty amazing people. There's no way you can put UT Austin and UM-A2 below UF.

WOW one spot? :( I thought I had a chance at ann abhor. I could make UT but probably not business, since I don't have that stellar of a rank.
