In the summer of 2009, I did a research program at Boston University
I also volunteer in an emergency room on weekends

I would like to study pre-med in college, hopefully the hospital experience will help.
I think my teacher recs and applications will be pretty good.

please tell me what you think!

in addition, my unweighted gpa is 3.8, and my class is not ranked

Your schools info can tell you more than we can. At typical NE preps, most of the slots at HYP will go to the hooked–the legacies, recruited athletes and top URMs. As an ORM from a prep school, you have very tough competition at top colleges.

You’ll get into your two legacy schools with ease and have a good shot at Cornell and JHU.

Indian from Asia, or Indian as in Native American?

Hmm…well your stats and wat not are decent for most schools in the country. However, as hmom pointed out, your an ORM from a NE prep school. I hate the fact that this matters (I am a white male from a public school in Nebraska…lol so I guess I am a little better off than you), but it does. In all honesty, I would be surprised if you made it into the HYP…but it could happen. With that said, you will have NO trouble at the schools you are legacies at. Additionally, you would be EXTREMELY competitive at Brown, Cornell, JHU, and Georgetown. Lastly, Columbia and UPenn are definately possible for you…I’d say you’ll get into one of them, but I am no admissions officer.

^^I would assume Indian from Asia, though the OP will have to confirm this. Overall though, I’d say you have a decent chance. While being an ORM is definitely a negative, your scores are competitive. Do you know what your rank is? I think you might get into some of the lower Ivies, but I’m not too sure about Harvard or Yale. Have you done anything that makes you stand out amongst those with scores equally as good as yours? Regardless though, best of luck!

If you’re a Native American sort of Indian, you’d be a shoo in everywhere - I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into all the schools you listed.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I am an indian from Asia. I would say that I am in the top 10% of my class.
I would like to double major in biology and political science in college (im not sure this is even possible - ill have to look it up) - i am interested in becoming a infectious disease doctor to work in impoverished countries
one possible hook is that im trying to become a (respected) google code developer in javascript, but i don’t see how this will help me.
Any suggestions for increasing my chances?

I’m a little worried about how few APs I’ve taken… it seems like everyone else has taken 10 or more. My school doesnt offer many APs (they say they’re not “AP driven”). Will this hurt my chances at top colleges?

About the APs…?

I think it’s a pretty good list. As a cautious person, I would add in at least one truly safe safety, but not everybody would.

What are you talking about? You’ve taken five APs, which is totally fine. I’ve only taken 4. Honestly, your college counselor’s cover letter will explain how many AP classes your school offers…

I’d say you have a VERY good chance at JHU, NU, U of C, Georgetown and Cornell. Columbia and U Penn are probably matches, maybe a slightly reach-y matches.
Harvard, Yale, and Brown are reaches, but then again they are for everyone.

I’d really appreciate it if you would chance me back.

likely rejection from Harvard and Yale

I don’t know about your chances at Harvard or Yale, I guess that really comes down to your essays and recommendations. But I think you’d have high chances at Columbia, UPenn, and Brown (much better than me at least) and I’d say you’re pretty much in for the rest.

Please chance me back, I’d really appreciate it, my post is: What are my chances at these colleges?

You are a very competitive candidate, but reach for all the ivies (they are reaches for everyone). Match for Northwestern, JHU, UChicago, and Georgetown. Good luck!

Please chance me?
