Hi, I am from Brazil, but also have american citizenship, and am planning on applying to Princeton, Harvard and/or UPENN (Wharton). I would be majoring in either Economics or Finance.

IB - Math HL, Physics HL, Portuguese HL, Spanish HL, Geography SL, English SL

Predicted 36 points
My school doesn't give GPAs nor Class rank, but I would be predicted top 10%

Extra curriculars:
Student council class representative (2 years)
Co-editor of school newspaper (1 year)
Many MUNs (model united nations) (2 years)
Taught english to young children at a public kindergarden (1 year)
One of the leaders of a group that raised 10,000 US dollars in two weeks for a local soccer team
Tennis at intramural level
Member of school's soccer and volleyball team

Fluent Portuguese, English and Spanish

PS: My father is an alumni at Harvard, I don't know how this affects my chances. Also I wouldn't be applying for financial aid, again I don't know how this affects my chances.

What are my chances at these three colleges? What if I apply early?

your grades seem fine if you are gonna be top ten percent. However, for those schools, a 1400 Math + CR score is nothing too special especially since you have a very high math. I would recommend looking at a school where a high math and low verbal are less common than at those particular ivies. Say middlebury or amherst. right now...
harvard-real reach
princeton- reach
wharton- reach

None to apply early if you are doing it for percentage options. Apply early to a school because you would choose it over ANY other school. The test is if you got into all the schools you applied to, that early school would still be the one you choose.

Reaches are schools where your stats are generally lower than those of the current admitted students.

I'd say they are all slightly out of range, Wharton ED would be your best bet but it could go either way. Harvard could happen easily if your dad is a very active alumnus with connections, but it could just as easily be a rejection if this isnt the case.

You might want to aim a little lower and consider the other Ivies as well.

I see, but aren't the stats required somewhat lower for international students?
If I applied early to the one I most want to get in, will my chances increase?

At Wharton early will help you more than at Princeton and Wharton than Harvard. If you are considered 'hispanic' then your chances significantly improve at all of these.

Choose based on what school you want though of you apply early, Wharton, Harvard, and Princeton are all very different socially.

I think all of the schools you are aiming are a bit too reach for you perhaps you could have better chances at harvard because of legacy and a connection but that would not guarantee admission.

I knew a guy who his father was best friend with the Dean of admissions at Princeton however there was not much he could to guarantee him a spot. The dean would not jeopardize his job and reputation. By the way the kid had 1580 SAT and the best EC's but he was still rejected.

You should try applying to more safety schools.

if you apply as an international, you cannot apply for financial aid or it will drastically lower your chances . . . if you apply from US, no effect.

if you are a URM, and legacy, and apply early to Harvard, you would be increasing your odds, but there's no guarantee--high level admissions is a lottery.

What do you mean which do we recommend? Are you implying that you are going to a college based on its brand name and status??? Oh my gosh, this cannot be the production of an IB student...

Anyway, the Ivies will be a reach for you. Look for a school you actually like and prepare to relax because after taking Math HL and TOK, year 1 of college ATLEAST should be a breeze. Or just get a lot of credits with AP tests.

I was born and raised in Brazil, but I'm also an american citizen. Am I considerem URM?

quitejaded:
By "what do you reccomend" I meant that I would be very happy going to any of the three I mentioned, because I visited all of them January this year, together with other schools, and liked them the most. However, I understand that it is very hard to get into any of these, therefore I want to know into which of them I have more chances... Hope you understood now...

do you identify as Brazilian? Is it part of your identity, do you maybe belong to a cultural group at school or participate in events with a local Brazilian community?

that would be how I would identify someone as "brazilian," but it's up to you . . .
also, i think URM won't help you that much in this case--sorry. Your best shot is your legacy at Harvard; if it were me, I would apply EA there, but Harvard is so tough these days . . .

legacy at Harvard will definitely help. do you have mostly A's in high school? i advise applying ED at Harvard, b/c i think the legacy will give you a better chance there than at the other 2. good luck!

Legacy at Harvard won't get you in. Your SAT score is too low for the three schools you listed, and your ECs are solid but not spectacular. I'd suggest applying to the bottom Ivies (which are still a reach). Also, top 10% of class is not good enough for UPenn, Harvard, or Princeton. You should be in the top 2-4%--depending on the size of your class.

you should really try some less selective schools.. your stats wont get you in the shot pool for any of these ivy's.. what I mean by shot is having a chance..

I hope I get lucky then! If I am to apply as an URM, how should I do it? What are my chances at UPENN RD? What about the Huntsman program ED? I am fluent in ENglish, Portuguese and Spanish, and my best academic subject is Math (IB Math HL)...
