Estimate of chances esp for Yale?

Moving up. This post is about my 16 yo daughter...neither she nor we have any idea if she is a candidate for an Ivy league school. She loved Yale and Columbia after touring (wants to double major in either chem or physics and music) and wants to know if her stats would make her competitive.

I think her stats are probably competitive so she should definitely go for it...

...But, probably not have her heart set and her self esteem invested in getting in. Those could be her two reach schools along with matches & safeties.

Yes, she has earned herself a lottery ticket for Yale, and maybe two tickets for Columbia. She sounds like a great kid!

Next, look at the important part of the list - matches and safeties!

RE: Science EC's
has she done any science clubs or competitions?

No science clubs, etc. EC are mainly dance, vocal music, theater of all kinds, golf team (lettered both as fresh and soph and on again this year, average player), school newspaper.

Thats going to make for an interesting application - the vocal music is very strong. When you visit other colleges, talk to their performing arts folks - could be that sending extra stuff with the application would help.

Seeing that she is not doing science for fun, I would be a little careful about specifying majors on the app, or indeed of applying to a university where you would have to declare a major early in the process, or indeed choose a specific college within the university (like at CMU - my son didn't apply there for that very reason). I think your D's credentials in the arts will strenghten her application over all - just give it a little thought on the presentation.

Ohio mom, thanks so much for your insight and advice. Yes, she had planned to include samples of recent performances (an Italian aria and her big solo from the musical) with her app. What you say certainly makes sense. Although she has not done much extracurricular science/math, she has doubled up on maths this year (Honors Pre Calc and AP Stats) and will have both AP Chem and AP Physics next year...she was hoping this would show her commitment to science.
