Chances at JHU?

Hey everyone, Johns Hopkins has always been my dream school, completely legit. But because of essential test scores that still need to be taken/improved, I will end up applying for regular decision (but since it's my dream school I will doing regular decision everywhere). Can I please get an evaluation of my chances? Thanks!

GPA: 3.7 (rigorous curriculum, top 100 hs)
SAT: 2020 ....Math - 670 CR - 640 W -710 (retaking. aiming for 2150)
SAT 2: Math 790 , Chem 690 (retaking aiming for 750), Bio/Physics - Most likely 750

*~ extra classes i took when i had time :P
Some classes were only taken 1 trimester (we have 3 trimesters each yr)

Senior Year Course load: Linear Algebra & Differential Equations, AP Physics C, AP Chem, IB Spanish 5, World Lit II

E/C: Internship w/ Orthopedic Surgeon, Hospital Volunteer, Teacher's Assistant for summer classes kids K-8, Camp volunteer for kids with mental illnesses, Battlebots board member & participant, President of club aimed to help autistic children, Freshman and Sophomore Soccer, National Honor Society, and member of SouthAsian Club and World Hunger Club

aimed major: 1. BME program (extremely tough I know) 2. Chem & Biomolecular Eng. 3. Mechanical Eng.
no hook, out of state, middle class, nice essay, nice Math & Lit Recs,

CONS: asian, C+ in drivers education and first aid (same teacher hated me! will this affect me?), low science grades junior year (tough yr), very competitive highschool (many kids with good stats). For Class of 2012, 44 applied, 15 admitted, 7 enrolled

can i get a general idea of my chances please?
thanks for your time!

Your stats are alright. It helps if you’re not Asian and it also helps if you apply ED. Honestly, don’t ask for chances on CC. They can be misleading and discouraging.

Nothing I can do about my ethnicity lol, and I could rush my subject tests in November and send them directly but I might get bad scores, so I’m considering December. And I know I’ll get mixed opinions of my chances, but I’ll get a general idea and see if there’s room for improvement until then!

I’ll be blunt- BME is a huge stretch for you. it doesn’t hurt to apply but don’t hold your breath. However, it looks like you DO have a shot to get in for another major

Also, I recommend applying ED. Your test scores aren’t bad and ED will give you a much higher chance to get in. Also, if you don’t get in, with your stats you’ll probably get deferred to RD in which case you can send in your new scores.

That is great advice, I guess I’ll just work hard and do the best I can to improve my scores. I just hope they dont get wasted if I do terrible in November. Obviously, BME would be preferred but with far from perfect stats, I know it’s a long shot. Will it hurt my chances if I apply to BME as my first choice, and chemical and biomolecular engineering as my second?

I don’t think it will hurt your chances. I am pretty sure (but not 100%) that you can be rejected from the BME program but still accepted to the Engineering School.

A word about the ChemE program, though – “Chemical” is somewhat of a misnomer for Hopkins’ ChemE program. It’s MUCH more focused on the “Biomolecular” part of it. I’m not sure if that affects your decision, but it’s something to keep in mind.

yes, BME is a different acceptance letter. You can be rejected from BME and still be accepted to Hopkins. Also, I’ve heard it’s not too hard to transfer into BME after your freshman year as long as you get good grades since so many people drop BME after their first year.

Sounds good! I’m considering using my ED for Hopkins if I can get my subject tests done in November. Will I have time to take my subject tests in November, wait for my scores to come back, and then send them in? Or am I supposed to send them directly to JHU for ED?

Furthermore, I still have to retake chemistry, and one more subject test (biology/physics I’m considering) for JHU. I feel like I can get a 750 in chemistry regardless what I do in November,. But simultaneously studying my other science subject test might result in a lower score in that science (and get around a 700), and possibly hurt me in Chem too. Do you suggest I take the risk and apply ED anyways and have my SAT 2 scores sent directly, or should I take my time with the subject tests and do Regular Decision and take my second science in December and get around a 750 for that science too? Thanks!
