Chances at Johns Hopkins, Public Ivies...

Basics: Currently a Junior (I know, not an accurate picture, but I would like to get a rough idea), White, Jewish, reside in Maryland

Interested Schools: UMD college park (confident, basic school), Michigan- Ann Arbor and Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, as well as Johns Hopkins

Interested Major: Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering

Unweighted GPA: 3.7
Weighted (honors/AP classes = 5 for A, 4 for B, so on...) : 4.28
ACT: Taking it this February, but I got a 29/12 written on a practice last year
SAT II: Biology (700, I can easily take it again), French (800)

APs: Microeconomics (4), Macroeconomics (4), US Government (5), AP World (current), AP Psychology (current), AP environmental science (current), AP Calculus B/C (current, but almost everyone gets a 5)

ECs: President and Founder of Young Republicans Club, Vice President of the Jewish Culture Club, and I probably could stretch it by saying I am captain of the sailing team (We only have a couple people).

Sports: Cross Country (9 & 10), Track (9& 10), Indoor Track (9), Sailing (2 seasons, 11)

Volunteer: For my rabbi, 40 hours; for a local summer camp as a counselor, 80 hours

Other Achievements: National Honors Society, French Honors Society, my school has recognition for a challenging science course of study

Next Year I am signed up for: AP Biology, AP Physics B, AP French Lang, AP Literature, multivariable calculus

3.7 UW GPA and 29 ACT will likely be rejected from UM, UIUC, and John Hopkins for Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering.

That said, you have a lot of time to improve your standing. If you can get your GPA up to a 3.8 and your ACT to 31, your chances will improve dramatically. A strong Junior year will have a very positive effect on your application.

I would recommend retaking Bio as well as adding a Math II subject test. If you get a 5 on BC, I’m guessing you can easily score 700+.

None of your schools are out of reach, but it will take some hard work and strong essays to strengthen your chances.
