Anything…?

If Haverford/Grinnell is indeed your first choice as you’ve stated earlier, then you should apply ED. Remember that you can pull out of the ED agreement if the financial aid isn’t good. However, in your case, I would definitely recommend explaining your situation if you get in through ED.

As someone got into Haverford ED, I think you’re doing quite well for Haverford. Look at the Honor Code too because it’s significant.

I’m sorry that I don’t really know any of these schools haha…but I know FOR SURE you’re in at U of A! good luck!

I’ll be looking at all the colleges I haven’t seen yet over the summer help me narrow down my choices/make sure I actually feel at home in the areas, and then I’m hoping to do an overnight visit at the beginning of next school year to decide where I would most like to go, so I think I’ll be applying ED to one of those two Do you think that Haverford ED would make it rather likely for an admit? I know all about Haverford’s Honor Code, and I really like the spirit of it (how it’s student run, regularly amended — much better than a school-run honor code, which feels more oppressive). I know that it’s pretty different from Grinnell’s rather lax policies, but I would be happy with either :)

Thanks! It’s great to hear such positive thoughts (although I’m open to any criticism!) :)

Also, as an aside, does anyone know how pulling out of ED for financial aid works? Are you still accepted to the school, so that if financial aid were to be just as bad everywhere else you could still attend? Thanks!

Haverford is extremely competitive and that along with amherst is almost like getting into stanford and princeton. Unless you bring your sAT up by at least 100 points ESpecially critical reading, i doubt you have much of a chance at haverford and amherst.

For ED, you pull out by emailing the head of admissions and he or she will mail you confirmation pf the withdrawl. And once you withdraw, there is no chance of deciding on attending.

I know Haverford is very competitive, and actually I feel like Haverford might be a better fit for me than Amherst(I realize how difficult it is to get in there). I’m retaking the SAT in June, and I should be able to get my CR to at least a 700, ~730 M, and hopefully an upper 700s writing score. Even if that’s not the best score for Haverford, it does put me at the upper range of accepted SAT scores, and well above my schools accepted average. Is the SAT the weakest point of my stats for these schools?

Thanks for the clarification on ED :)

Bump? Thanks!

I would suggest that you take a look at the “Where did your SAT 1950-2100 child get in?” forum under the College Admissions subject here on CC. You have admirable stats but many of the schools on your list would not be considered a safety school for even the most stellar of students. The forum posts here on CC are a wealth of information. I would read up on the concept of safety schools as well as admissions and financial aid before you craft your list.

If financial aid is going to be a factor in your decision than I would urge you NOT to apply early decision anywhere. You will need to be able to weigh all of your options when you compare the different financial packages. The idea of backing out of an ED acceptance due to financial reasons is not a good idea. Sure, it is a way to do it but it is frowned upon and you should not go into the situation with this idea as your “out”.

A few other schools that would be worth considering - Tulane, Northeastern University, and Lehigh (not LAC’s but worth a look). Also, Lafayette, Union, Bucknell…

Keep in mind that while your stats may be right in line for these schools it does not mean that you are a sure thing as an admit. The process is holistic. These schools are putting together a class not simply admitting students. The vast majority of these competititve schools are turning away many, many highly qualified students.

That forum seems helpful, sportsmom2016! I know most of my schools aren’t safeties (although I feel that Gettysburg/UofA seem fairly safe to me). I know about the idea of a safety school — that it should be a sure-bet for admission, be affordable, and have the programs you want. UofA is my main one, as I’m guaranteed admission, in state and a guaranteed 25% financial aid from merit, plus they have excellent programs in business/architecture and an OK english program. The only reason I don’t want to go there is because of the size, my dislike of AZ and my desire to be farther away from home, but I would be OK going there if all other schools rejected/had no financial aid.

I certainly wouldn’t be planning on having a way out, rather I was wondering how the process for ED works (I wasn’t planning on one before, but if it helps my chances then it would definitely be nice). I think I’ll talk to my GC about this, and see what the best way to explain this in a financial aid application, and probably will apply at their regular time.

I know there’s no certainty to being admitted to any of my top schools — I was hoping with this forum I could find out more about how my ECs would be in relation to scores, as looking at a couple (if any) numbers from naviance, and even less meaningful ones from CollegeBoard aren’t too helpful in determining if I’m setting my sights appropriately.

Anyone else?

I think that your alumni status definitely helps for Stanford and Princeton! However, you should try to raise your SAT I score a litter higher, it could always help. Also, make sure that you do well on your SAT IIs!! Your ECs seem pretty good so I think that your in a pretty good position for the other schools on your list. You could also look at Bentley or Colgate. I’m not too familiar with their greek life though.

Thanks, runner2411! I think I can get a little over a 2200 next try, if not a little better. Thanks for the feedback/suggestions!

Anyone else?

Anybody? I’ll chance you back!

I’ve matriculated at Princeton, but you should take a look at Bowdoin! I absolutely loved it as well, and believe it or not, it was a tough decision between the two.
