Chances at LSA Honors and Ross Preferred Admit

I was accepted to Michighan shortly before Christmas but haven't heard any response from the LSA Honors Program or the Ross School of Business Preferred Admit Program. I have a 32 ACT and am first in my class of 177 students with a 4.0 unweighted GPA. I have decent extracirriculars, am from a small town in Missouri, and believe my Honors Program essay was some of my best work. I also had a 35 ACT Math score and wondered if the Ross School would emphasize Math scores more than other areas. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have on my chances of admission to either of these programs. Thanks!

I think your chances for honors is above 50%, your GPA/rank are awesome, but your ACT is average for honors. I don't know much about admission to b-school but I think you have a good shot.

I received my rejection letter today from the Honors Program. (See my stats above.) The letter states "If you compile a good academic record during your first semester, you may want to apply to the LSA Honors Program again..." Is this this just standard yada yada or do a meaningful number of students actually get in during the second semester of their freshman year?

wow, i'm surprised you didn't get into honors. don't they take the top 10 percent? i have no idea about the numbers, but a good number of my friends got in...

That ACT score is pretty low for honors...

I received the same invite as Anhydrosis - write an essay, we'll consider you for Honors, yada yada. I packed off the essay and was rejected, but my rejection letter stated that although they did not want me in the Honors program, they still wanted me to take Great Books - receive a schedule override and everything. The response surprised me; I didn't think they'd do that and have never heard that sort of response before.

Also note that all of this took place with my ACT score - 29. I was amazed to receive anything at all from them, period.

if u dont write an essay for honors can u still get in?

The Honors website says the middle 50% ACT last year was 31 - 33. Thus, my ACT would have been smack dab in the middle and my GPA at the top. I assume they got a better crop of candidates this year or I did something really stupid (which I can't figure out yet).

I wrote the essay and "thought" it was pretty good, but, of course, I would think that. ;)

sounds like honors is cracking down on us this year too. scary. no worries, good luck with hearing back from ross!

anhydrosis, I'd like to see the link where you got that statistic because I think it's wrong. I recall 32-35 being the middle ACT range for honors. They aren't necessarily "cracking down" this year, anhydrosis' essay just wasn't as good as predicted is all. Usually a 32 ACT will not get in, but with a stellar essay, it's a shoe-in.

Here's the link: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/honors/prospects/index.htm

You're entirely right anhydrosis. Perhaps it was different when I checked it for the class entering Fall 2004 (when I was considering honors). Not sure where I was confused.

Do you know if they admit a meaningful number of students during the second semester of freshman year? Thanks.

You were right. My Honors Program essay wasn't as good as I thought. I used a modified example from my original application and they didn't like that. In short, they said I reused significant portions of my application essay and that this action did not display the attitude they were looking for. I thougt I was being creative in the way I used the example and changed it. Now, I just feel stupid because it didn't occur to me the way they would interpret this; I thought I was being creative. :(

So, for those with stats similar to mine, don't assume you won't get into the Honors Program. Chibearsfan hit the nail on the head.

I'm impressed you got that specific of an answer from the honors program. See guys, they do read the applications quite thoroughly. Don't worry about it anhydrosis, you'll still excel here I'm sure. Just take it as a lesson learned. And I've never heard of someone transferring in to honors after a semester. I didn't know it was possible.

HighschoolDOC - I didn't write the essay (missed the "deadline") but I got in. I imagine that you would be at a slight disadvantage though.

Wow, yeah I thought getting in the Honors Program required a 32-35 ACT. Perhaps the quality of students is decreasing or are they trying to lower the bar? Not sure..hmm..
