What do you think my chances are? UT Mccombs seems to be a crapshoot. I'm really worried because my rank is not quite there, but my SAT is well above average and I'm sure all of my EC's and other stuff is average to above average. For those of you who don't know any of UT McCombs stats, these were the 2013 Freshman stats:

Class rank (enrolled): 8th percent
SAT: 1320 (enrolled), 1342 (admitted)

Thank you!

If you are a strong writer, apply for Plan II. You can take business classes and tailor your P2 education toward business with foundations or double major in Econ. I think based on your stats, EC and awards it is your best shot.

@collegeshopping Okay. Thanks for the input. Would you say I’m a reach, high match, or match at McCombs? I’ll definitely consider plan II, but, to be honest, I would prefer to just go to McCombs.

Reach. It is typical for McCombs to fill with the top 5%ers.

My son just got in. Not even in the top 25%, close but not quite. Wgpa 4.0. His HS doesn’t rank, but still they have a good idea. It seems all over the board with who is getting in. Have you taken the ACT? My son did significantly better on it.

bump 10char

bump 10char please i want some opinions

bump…

Not being in the automatic admission %, you’ll have to look into getting into UT first. With your scores and everything, you’ll have a great chance in getting in. I got in McCombs and everything you have is much better than mines but rank. You’ll have a decent chance, getting that rank up will help the most.

Honestly, they weigh it very holistically. I got in and here were my stats:

ACT: 35

Sat 2: 800 (Math 2) and 740 (Us History).

Rank: Top 20%

I also had a variety of extracurricular with a business bent. In addition I was in band, and played competitively. Like you, I took the hardest courses I could.

Truth be told, McCombs actually takes your recommendations, and essays into HEAVY consideration. I think what sold it for me was that I had a killer recommendations from a finance professor at columbia (took a class during the summer) and I wrote my business essay on Clayton Christensen and his book “The Innovator’s Dilemma.”

It’s the whole package, and how you spin your story. If I were to chance you, I’d give you a 50/50 shot.

Also, while Plan 2 does take into consideration your essays, they are VERY stats heavy. Even more so than McCombs. Usually, people who get into Plan 2 get into BHP. So, in response to the post above, I have to respectfully disagree. You’ll get into McCombs before Plan 2.

.

IndianBoy, thank you for the advice and the “chance”. I’ll try to add some more business related EC’s with my FBLA and summer internship. Congrats on getting in, hope to see you there in a few years.

bump

bumpidty bump bump

I got in non ranked, ACT 31. I think you have a decent chance if you have great essays, tailor them to your interest.

bump. please guys i’m really freaking out

Hey Blake!
I made an account so I could reply to your thread.
I am a high school senior that just got accepted into McCombs about a month ago.
rank: 30/500ish (approx. top 6%)
SAT: 1700 (not my best)
ACT: 31
I am really involved in band (leadership, contests, competitions, camps, etc.) and I really made that work in my favor. McCombs, in my case, I feel judged me very holistically and saw that I worked hard and was passionate about something (band has basically consumed my life), and I think they took that into consideration the most. I feel that you have a VERY good shot at McCombs. Rank is NOT everything. Especially considering that you go to a smaller PRIVATE school, your peers and classes are probably a lot more competitive than mine (Weatherford High School). You have a LOT of leadership experience and extracurriculars going for you. Looking at your stats, you appear very well rounded and cultured. I am honestly envious because I am not extremely athletic and my comfort zone does not extend very far beyond my band family, haha. Please, coming from someone who worried and stressed about their admittance into McCombs, just be CONFIDENT and use your essays to your advantage. Why do you stand out? What makes you different? What leadership qualities do you possess? Even talk about a struggle and how you overcame that.

Rank is not everything. I think you’re in.
Good luck!

(P.S. consider the avg rank - top 8% – that means they accepted a lot of people below the curve to balance out all of the people above the curve - simple statistics!)

Not to make your head explode, but that 8% avg class rank, what is the time period? Is it the past year? Or a range of years?

I won’t hazard to predict whether or not you will get in. I have known kids with stats like yours who have been admitted, and they have been kids with great ECs fwiw.

^^ The statistics came from last year- 2013. In 2012 the avg. class rank was 6.7%, but that moved up for some reason. I’ll provide a link to McCombs website to prove the rank. http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/home/bba/prospective/statistics</a> . Go to this page and click on the Freshman Profile and Transfer Statistics tab.

Keep in mind, this is the class rank avg for those admitted. The average for kids who enrolled could be even lower than that.
