Chances at mid level uc's

Hello,

I feel like I am in a tight spot, and cannot seem to find any solid information. I wrote my UC essay on my "creativeness" and how it leads me to want to be an engineer.

Now here I am a bit confused- I would like to apply to UCI, UCD, UCSD, and UCSB with a major in aero or mech. engineering. I am aware that at these schools, engineering may make it harder for me to get in.

My grades are "borderline" for these schools; weighted 4.0 gpa, 1900 sat, 640 in sat ii math c, and 700 in biology. I got a C in AP chem junior year as well.

I do not want to lose my opportunity at these schools because of the fact that I chose a major that is much more competitive, so would I be better off going as undeclared? I am worried that this will conflict with my essay, in which I stated that my "dream" is to be an engineer. I was thinking of modifying my essay to state that my "dream" is to simply be able to use my creativeness in some general field.

I was also wondering- I have heard that this does not apply to ucla and ucb, but suppose I were to put my alternate major as undeclared, and my first choice major as engineering. Will UCI/UCD look at this alternate major as a second evaluation if I cannot get in to engineering?

So what would you guys say my chances are for irvine, davis, santa barbara, and san diego? For engineering? undeclared?

Thanks

Hey,
I’m applying for engineering at the UCs too. I went to UCD’s preview day, and they had an engineering informational meeting kind of thing, and basically, UCD does not make Engineering an impacted major. Since UCI and UCSB are around the same level in the UC system, I would also assume that UCI and UCSB do not make engineering impacted (or probably way less impacted than UCB and UCLA). Judging from your stats, I’m pretty sure you can make it into UCD, UCI and UCSB, and you seem to have a decent shot at UCSD. Good luck! And don’t miss the UC deadline! ;)

Hard to determine where you stand without a detailed report about your high school career. For example, your class rank, your ECs, your community service, awards/honors, anything that makes you stand out.

What do you mean borderline? Dude you’re above their averages.

Thanks for the replies. I am aware that uci/ucd may be matches for me, I suppose I am just worried about the fact that I am hoping to major in engineering will push me below the engineering average. I can’t seem to find anything on how much engineering might affect the average gpa/sats’ for the uc’s.

My EC’s/comm. service is nothing special. No leadership positions, etc. either.

I’m in the process of making a revised version of my essay that does not specifically state i want to go into engineering just in case I decide my chances at engineering are not too good. My math iic 640 seems really low.

Anyways, I appreciate the responses…some more opinions would be nice as well! thanks!
