Im a student in high school class of 2011 and I'm not sure I have what it takes to get into the really good schools for physics such as MIT, Caltech, etc. I know I have formidable acedmics and EC's, but so does everyone. What do I still need to accomplish to have a chance, and what are those chances now assuming a good senior year?

Acedemics
3.96/4.0 gpa
AP bio -- 5
This senior year I will take AP physics, Ap calc AB, and AP english
SAT scores: 620CR 760M 680W
ACT composite: 28 ( I will retake)

EC: (by end of senior year)
Track 1 year
Marching Band 3 years

German club 2 years
Key Club 2 years

Other:
Gifted and Talented Program
Award for Acedemics in German
Award for most improved musically

You will need to take Math II and a science subject test if you are applying to MIT/Caltech. (I don’t know if these schools take the ACT in place of SAT and subject tests, but then your ACT score is not strong enough.)

To tell the truth, those scores do not give you a strong chance at MIT/CalTech/Cornell. MIT and CalTech like to see strong science/math-oriented activities, as well as competitive science and math scores.

Check out the MIT/Caltech/Cornell/Berkeley forums.

I would consider Berkeley a reach also, especially if you were thinking about studying engineering. If you could raise your SAT or ACT score and do well on your SAT II’s, you would have a chance.

I must also add that many of your ECs are pretty insignificant. I would seriously consider volunteering at a hospital and try to reach at least a hundred or so hours.

It would depend on which UC he or she is applying to. For UCLA/Cal, these stats are actually on the low side. For UCD, UCSB, UCI, they’re about right.

Any leadership positions or accomplishments within your ECs? The first is self explanatory, for accomplishments I’m thinking of things like projects that you helped organize/ money you raised/ etc.

Race and gender are relevant here; please specify. I’m currently assuming you’re a white male.

MIT, Caltech- High Reach
Cornell, Berkeley- Reach, but I think your chances at Berkeley are slightly higher than for Cornell (if instate)
