Hey
Im Indian and want to pursue physics/ math or engineering. Not too sure what to include but here're my stats:

SAT I- 2240 (720W 740CR 780M)
SAT II- took the may 5 SAT. expecting near 800's in math II, physics and chem

Doing the IB. Physics HL, Math HL, Chemistry HL, English SL, French Ab Initio and Economics SL. I'm expecting a 42/45

ECs
Played soccer for the school team since the 8th grade.

Have debated for the school team since the 8th grade. Have won "best debater" in a few debates.

Have acted in 4 plays over the last two years. Taken part in many more skit competitions. I'm directing a play this summer.

Coached children from an orphanage in soccer.
Taught English and Math in a school for underprivilaged children

Been part of the student council in the 11th grade and am now school president.

Participated in a Habitat for Humanity build project last october. Also took party in another build project in November.

ModelUN- represented Denmark in the Security Council

Participated in a highly selective (36 from India + Pakistan) peace conferences organised by the United World College, Hong Kong.

I dont know where to apply. I've thought of MIT, Princeton and Cornell. What are my chances here and which are the other colleges I should be looking at?
Also, are there any weak points in my application that I should try and improwhich parts of my application should i look to improve?

This will sound bad, but it shows how insanely tough it is to get into MIT, Princeton or Cornell if you are an international applicant: Improve your SAT scores. A 2240 will put you at the low end of all international applicants. Otherwise, you have great ECs and a good IB score.

Princeton: Reach
MIT: Reach
Cornell: High match

thanks for the reply mj. wow, yeah kinda figured that i'd have to work on the SAT. is there anything alse I could do to boost my chances? also, could you recommend other colleges that I should be looking at- reaches, matches or safeties?

Georgia Institute of Technology
Carnegie Mellon
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
University of Michigan
Johns Hopkins
Case Western Reserve
University of Chicago
Purdue

Hopkins, U of Chicago, and Georgia would probably be low reaches, the rest matches or low matches, and Purdue probably a safety.

Every school has a different policy about giving financial aid to internationals. Go to the school's website to find more information. However, in most cases, internationals get screwed in terms of financial aid.

I'm an Indian too, and I was just browsing through when I saw how strikingly similar your stats are to mine. I haven't done the IBs, I'm a regular CBSE kid, and I have nothing national except the NTSE, although I have put together a lot of state level stuff (you know, interschool kinds) and a 2290 SAT score with triple 800s in Physics, Chem and Math 2. Plus I don't have sports.

I wanted to say DON'T WORRY. I got through to Princeton and Yale (among others) and am going to Princeton this fall with the rest of the class of 2011. Just make sure you put your heart and soul into the application. And I have aid for tuition, room and board. So basically all I'll have to pay is travel books and clothes.

Go for it. But make sure you keep back-up schools as well. I was rejected by Cornell... just so you know.

mj93: what? Princeton is a reach, while Cornell is a high match? For an international? I don't think so...

It's really difficult to tell an international's chance, but the odds are that it's a reach.

As for the aid at each school, Princeton is known for having more or less the best financial aid in the country (large endowment, tiny student body). MIT, if they accept you, will brandish any amount of money in your face to get you to come (MIT gives great finaid, too). And Cornell would be no different. They all cover 100% of your financial needs -- given that you're accepted. I don't think that admission for internationals is need-blind, though.

thanks a ton for the reply lepetite. im curious though- what were the other schools you applied to and how'd you fare?
and could anyone recommend some more schools.

So internationals all mostly same.I'm Chinese,2270 in SATI,800 in Math,780 in Physics,780 in Biology, finished college's math course,Won several trival prize, doing some community work, taught a few students, yet kicked by all schools I applied.

What's my chances in this year?

I want to do my best, but what should I do next?

I am an international (South Korean) student, who got into Princeton and Cornell and was rejected by MIT this year. I will be attending Princeton next year with $38000/yr financial aid.

I had 2260 SAT I (800M, 710CR, 750W), 800 in math and physics and 790 in chem. Full IB student (bio/eng/history HL, math/chem/physics/french SL), predicted 43/45, and I guess may be a bit better EC's than yours? Anyways, my stats and your stats seem pretty similar, and if I got into Princeton and Cornell, you certainly can too. I seriously think that essays made me. I put my heart into them, and everyone who read them said they were excellent. So try hard to write sincere essays.

Also, Cornell is NOT need-blind to internationals. I've also heard that MIT is actually pretty mean to internationals regarding financial aid, despite the whole "need-blind" facade they put up. Just thought that you should know.

hey coolness_rookie. just a couple of things i wanted to know.
1. you have 7 ib subjects?
2. what exactly do you mean that you poured your heart out in your essays? i hear a lot of people saying that but still don't know exactly what they mean. do you think i could have a look at your essays or something?
thanks

0739085: it's generally not considered good board etiquette to jack somebody else's chance threads asking for your own. Just a heads up.

As for the OP, you have great test scores (that 2240 is still excellent, don't worry), but the problem I see with you is that you are kind of all over the board. Not necessarily a bad thing, but in a very high-acchieving applicant pool like the one you're in, I'm not sure if the myriad of clubs and low-involvement community service you've been in is going to cut it. That said, I do think you will get into one of your schools, mostly on the back of your awesome tests.

thanks southeasttitan. i was actually worried about sounding too scattered myself. BUt my extra curriculars are a huge part of who I am and I would want any college im applying to to see that. That in mind, how should I present my extra curriculars? Should I pick just a few and concentrate on only those in my application or should I give it my all (there are a lot more and those will only scatter them even further) and hope for the best?

^^ hey, no hijacking. go created your own thread :)

(it's not "VERY RUDE", southeasttitan. maybe a little annoying)

as for OP. OK ECs (don't put "since 8th grade". colleges want the 4 years of high school, not what you did when you were 12). ok numbers.

here's the irony. for internationals, the TOP TOP schools are need blind when it comes to aid, so HYP don't care if you are applying for aid or no. but HYP will most likely reject you. the lower ivies, which could potentially accept you if you were an american, will reject you because you are asking for money.

so you can only hope to get into a good but not TOP TOP LAC. they get great students by offering them bribery
