chances at MIT/upenn/harvard/cornell

hey, i just wnated to see what some people thought about my chances. i already believe i have a good shot at all these schools, especially cornell. just curious to see what the rest of you think.

hit me with your worst put downs. MIT is my #1 by far and im EA'ing. if not that, then in order i want, upenns M&T, cornell engineering, penn wharton or engineering, maybe harvard. obviously i want to do engineering/maths and sciences

oh and also, dad went to top university in korea, sister graduated from cornell, and brother graduated from boston u.

Asian Male from NJ

top 10 in class out of like almost 300? school doesnt actually rank though. school was ranked #1 in nj for one of the years i was here. dropped a ltitle other years but basically always top 10ish.
GPA: 3.99 of 4.00 unweighted (only B i got was in health...o_O)
4.65 weighted... should be like 4.8 by semester
SAT: 800 math, 760 cr, 680 writing - i would take it again if i lost points in cr or math, but writing is least important so screw it.
II: chem 780, phys 770, mathii 800
ap: bc 5, lang 5, chem 5, will be taking ap us, a 2nd year physics course equivalent of ap, ap lit, ap spanish

interview: had a real good interview, showed him my interest in the school and what about me was different and that i had a few specific interests that i really put emphasis on. i also think i showed him im not just a stereotypical smart asian kid or something like that.

EC: film analysis club, red cross club but these 2 were just sparingly, a few meetings
-varsity ice hockey 4 years, captain 3 years, mvp a few years, other crap like that
-varsity xc 2 years
-freshman football
-varsity lacrosse 3 years, captain sr year, some awards, freshman lacrosse too
-select acapella group my senior year, showed interest in singing starting junior year with choir and did summer vocal institute too
-peer leader, selected by kids in my class as one of like 10 people to do... stuff
-prolly the biggest thing... got governor for new jersey boys state
-national spanish honor society
-doing siemens competition currently
-have some volunteer stuff
-some jobs (website)
-skills in webdesign, guitar... more like hobbies though
-tutored kids
-other stuff i prolly forgot
-im sexy

im also in contact witht he MIT lacrosse coach whos interested in me and would send a letter of rec... but he said it wont help too much.

You should be able to get into at least one of them, but don't be shocked if you are rejected, especially at MIT. At my school of 4500, the #1 kid 2 years ago with a 1590 SAT and a 4.0 uw gpa/4.83 w was rejected by MIT, but got into Harvard and Yale. I like your chances though to get into one of them, especially considering you're sexy.

i forgot to say....

for AMC10, in 10th grade i got like 120s? maybe 130s.
AIME my soph year i got something bad, below 5 im pretty sure
as a junior i think i got atleast a 6 or so. and AMC10 i got like 105 or something around there.

I think you will get into Cornell and maybe UPenn, but I don't really see Harvard or MIT for you. As an Asian male, you don't strike as a particularly intelligent person (compared to other applicants for those top schools) nor do you seem exceptionally well-rounded (your sports EC's are good, but other than that, nothing impressive or worth noting).

And why are you applying to Harvard if you want to do engineering? Shouldn't you apply to Caltech/Stanford/Princeton etc. instead?

"for AMC10, in 10th grade i got like 120s? maybe 130s."

^ that makes a HUGE difference. I wasn't too sure before, but now i really think you have a good shot at MIT and the others. However, Harvard and Upenn are still reaches, because your EC's aren't that great, and you don't really standout. You'll most likely get into 1 or 2 of those schools.

AMC 120~130s and AIME 5~6 is not that great at all for MIT or other schools of that caliber. Unless one qualifies for USAMO, it's not a big advantage.

thanks for the replies. i dont know if you guys know what boys state is though, getting governor for that is pretty huge. boys state picks a few guys from each high school for this week long seminar thing and out of 800 kids i got hte top position there.

i also forgot to say that i received the bausch & lomb honorary science award. they award it to one student out of a buncha high schools per region.

No I didn't know what boy state was.
But even knowing that, I don't think I see your chances at those school to be better. You say that boy state picks a few guys from each high school right? Ultimately, that means you are only top few at your school, doesn't it? I don't think that'd be considered as impressive as you seem to believe.

^But Njtitans was governor of Boys State, which is much more significant than simply being a member.

And another Asian male from New Jersey!

MIT: REJECT, unless they really want you for lacrosse.
upenn: Maybe
harvard: REJECT
cornell: Maybe

ooh sorry lol
man i guess i can't read
:P
well the governor thing definitely seems more impressive than before :P haha sorry
I think it's a good exemplification of your leadership skills and charisma
I don't think that'd help your chances at MIT much, but I think your chances at the other schools seem better than before.

well anyways, congrats on being the governor.

i'd say you're in at cornell. you have a good shot a upenn. mit and harvard are going to be tough since you're an asian male from nj =</p>

bump once only.

"And another Asian male from New Jersey!

MIT: REJECT, unless they really want you for lacrosse.
upenn: Maybe
harvard: REJECT
cornell: Maybe"

-- screw you! WHY DO ASIAN MALES FROM NEW JERSEY HAVE IT SO DAMN HARD?

You're one too eh?

yeah... :-(

but with higher SAT, higher GPA, worse EC's...

Well, a guy like this hurts everyone's chances. Higher GPA? by 0.01? haha

lol i have a perfect GPA besides a B in freshman health so im not really worried about that.

"Higher GPA? by 0.01? haha"

-yeah but w/e...I wish I was a Native American from Utah

congrats on governor of Boy's State.

Hey you have pretty similar stats to me, too.

our gpa and sat i&ii are very very similar and except I'm district treasurer for key club and you're gov for boys state.

hmmm... i'd say you have a good chance at any college as long as you stress your strong points like E/Cs. Cause EVERYONE who applies to Havard has good grades...and good test scores...the real deciding factor is your essays, E/Cs and recs
