Chances at MIT, Williams, and more

I've posted before o.o, but I have some new stats.

ACT: 34 (36 M, 33 Reading, 33 Science, 35 English)
SAT: 1560/2290 (780 M, 780 CR, 730 :[ W)
SAT II: 800- Math IIC, 740 Physics, 690 U.S. History :/
Other: 5 on APUSH, 4 English, and I am taking 4.5, I guess, AP classes this year: Calc AB, English, Physics, Chemistry. The .5 comes in with a self taught class that I managed to work out. I taught myself calculus at a summer program that forced me to take college algebra, and I thought there might be many things I missed. So, I took Calculus AB, the hardest class my school offers, and haven't learned too much. As I was bored, and because I wanted to learn, I set up to teach myself Calculus BC, as there weren't any teachers who could.
GPA: 3.94 UW
Rank: 1/87

Essays, Teacher Recs, etc. should be good. I put an essay in for every space that MIT offered. :[ There was one problem though. I tried for two months to schedule an interview with an Educational Counselor from MIT and the counselor continually made an appointment and canceled it. I emailed MIT about this around January 1st, and they said they will make a note on my application about this, or something of that sort. They also said it would not hurt me. Should I call them to make sure that they put this note on? (as the percent accepted for an interview is around 19%, while the percent for people that chose not to is 9%)

State: Mississippi
School Type: Small Catholic School
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male

Extracurriculars: Highest AMC-12 score in school and AIME qualifier, Piano for many years, Service Club, Quiz Bowl, won various statewide math tournaments, Bowling-top ranked player on the team ;D, Soon to be Eagle Scout (currently conducting a medical supply drive for a free clinic down by the gulf coast)

Summer Activities: 1 week Boy's State (please don't go there.. anyone), 3 weeks Governor School, 5 weeks Rural Medical Scholars

Work Experience: Worked for about 9 months at a garden store, 15-25 hours per week

My father went to Haverford, and my brother goes to Williams.

Chances at:

Haverford
MIT
Williams
Harvard
Princeton

get in everywher except MIT

:.( why not MIT

Good chance at Williams as a sib. The others just depend on app and recs.

bump? (10 char)

(10 characters)

ok. So mit likes peoples personality. whats your personality like?

I guess I have sort of a wry sense of humor, which came through in my essays. I wish my writing score could be better, but is it true that MIT does not consider Writing scores?

even if they don't consider writing scores they still see them and a 730 is not bad at alllllllllll, you have nothing to complain about. i think you have a good shot at all of your schools if you have really really really creative and well written essays.

Oh yeah! I forgot to put down my pride and joy: Who's Who Among American High School Students. /bump

You seem like you have a good chance anywhere....being from Miss will help too...that being said..you'll probly only get into one of HPM..just cause those schools are so rough to get into..good luck and try not to freak out too much

Hmm - my opinion is that your admission will entirely depend on your family's wealth. You've got solid scores and acadmic performance, you're an eagle scout (a hook according to many), and you've clearly done well in math (though I'm not really aware of the kind of competition that Mississippi that provides - no offense or anything). So to be blunt, if you're poor (which I suspect you aren't) then you are a shoe in. If not, then you are competitive but like most everyone else, are not extremely likely to get into Harv and MIT. Your leg status should help you out at Williams and Haverford.

No offense taken about the competitions. Now I wish I were poor.. Does living with a single parent (the other lives in Utah) count for anything? What do you mean by "not extremely likely"? My dad does research, but makes no where near what doctors such as cardiovascular ones make. I have two brothers, one of which is going to school that is around 40k dollars, and the other is going to college this year (the same time I am) that will be about 30k. Since most of the ones listed are around 40k, these high costs will make my family poor.. so does that count ;( ?

Haha - no, that doesn't count. The thing is, you've done well for yourself in high school, but there is a very large pool of other kids who have done well in HS as well applying to the same schools, so it's all going to come down to the composition of the applicant pool, and whether you are the one who can fill any holes in it. Your leg status will be helpful as well.

I think you have a good chance at every school....especially Williams since your brother is attending school there....MIT might be a slight reach/reach but since you have had a strong background in science in math you probably have a good chance!! GOOD LUCK!!!
