Essay will be pretty good and recomendation will be awesome

visited mit in the summer

applied for mites, didnt get in

my AIM is iotasquared so IM me if you want to talk or have some feedback. Im usually on 24/7

Your GPA and test scores are just too low for an accepted applicant. It's a reach, less than 25% chance of admission.

What other schools are you interested in?

Haha, you do realize that, for a school with a 14% admission rate, a 25% chance of acceptance is significantly above average...?

That's why I wrote "LESS THAN" 25%.

I just didn't want to come up with a concrete number.

Well, the unweighted gpa is low because of the fact that i take around 10 classes at one time, so im sure all the extra classes covers that up

Also, im assuming my SAT score will increase, the 590V was doing it with no idea what to expect and now im actually studying for that crap

Quality over quantity.

Even if your SAT increases, I don't think you have a reasonable chance.

nope... not even a reach,,

I don't think an MIT admit is very likely, but the one thing that stands out (and that makes it worth completing the application) is that your class rank is extremely high. I don't think you should apply early - your first quarter and midyear grades might help (if they are good, of course).

wow,, your skool is reaaaaaalllly huuuuggeeee

I'd apply, but don't freak out if you don't get in. They're all competitive nerds.

Who wants to go reply to my thread?

"Haha, you do realize that, for a school with a 14% admission rate, a 25% chance of acceptance is significantly above average...?"
the message is very interesting. Do you think the logic is correct?

Well, the problem is that the 14% overall admit rate isn't really applicable to everyone -- the rate changes for various subgroups (internationals, minorities, people who interviewed, people with perfect SAT scores...). The overall admit rate hides those trends in the data -- different people really do have widely different chances depending on their circumstances. :)

My guess would be that the average applicant -- white male, good SAT scores (2100-2250), several ECs, strong GPA -- would have "average" chances, but vary any of those factors and it becomes difficult to predict.

And MIT students are emphatically not "all competitive nerds".

Gosh I just make a joke and somebody's disparaging me for it.

Being a competitive nerd can be a good thing in some ways, anybody knows that. There are a lot of CC people who are competitive nerds, but they're headed in the right direction.

Nerdiness is in the eye of the beholder!

Sorry Godfather, didn't mean to get touchy. Many people say that and aren't joking, and I'm a little sensitive about that particular epithet.

hey again mollie,

so are you saying that if 8 identical white males with good SAT scores (2100-2250), several ECs, and strong GPAs applied, one would get in?

and, bringing the post back to the OP, the extracurriculars seem pretty sweet, but i agree, the scores are low. did the 3 people who got into MIT before you have similar grades?

Well, even if you get a pass on your crappy SATI verbal (you are taking it again, right!) your sub par AP scores really stand out and raise questions about your judgement. Why did you take so many? That 3,3 in Physics C doesn't help--it's the most heavily curved AP out there. You're all over the place. No research projects? Ok, you're a bit of a Math wiz--who's not. ?

P.S. That PSAT is low too. Forget you ever took it, and leave it off your resume.

At least in theory, this is right. In practice... not so sure. That is to say, I'm not sure the admission of any particular person tracks well with the overall statistics. I mean, it's not like the admissions guys make piles of 8 similar people, then throw darts to decide which of the 8 they pick -- there's a rhyme and reason to it, but far be it from me to say what precisely that is.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Everyone i talk to, including the admissions officers at MIT and ppl who go there tell me that gpas and SATs dont mean everythign. As for me, would a 3.6 unweighted diminish the fact that i have to juggle 10 aps a semester instead of 6 to get top 1, and i have to research classes also. If i was just like any other person taking 3 aps and 3 honors, a 4.0 would be a walk in the park... O and btw the 3's in physics, i was teh only one to pass through self study. Even the person who went to MIT didnt pass. ::shrugs:: what do i know, my gpa isnt high enough

I think when he said sat's don't mean everything they meant not everyone gets a 1600. Take it over, and replace it with a 700 on verb
