I did do the pre screening for the MT program and I was invited to come audition in person.
I know my SAT and ACT scores are lower then the middle 50% at which people are accepted but I'm hoping that my extra curriculars, gpa, and talent make up for it.

I do have a couple of questions too. I keep getting emails from U of M about getting my admission decision from them next week, but I haven't had my in person audition yet. So I emailed U of M and the person responded said that the decision I will get next week is the LSA decision and that the MT program will be decided later. Does this mean if I don't get into LSA I won't get to audition for the MT program? Also is being invited to audition in person a selective choice made by U of M or is it not so selective?

Hi there. MT is even more unpredictable in terms of chances than regular umich programs because they’re choosing two dozen from hundreds of talented applicants! Your decision will be heavily weighted by your audition. It is a tough admit, but talent will trump your stats, so you’re well in range. Best wishes on your audition, and congrats for getting one!

If you applied to lsa as well, an admit, defer or even rejection from lsa will not impact your admissibility to the school of music, which is it’s own “school” just like lsa. However, if you do get into lsa as well, you could in theory dual degree if you’re also accepted to mt (but mt is so sequenced that is a tough road). If you don’t get into the school of music but are accepted to lsa, then you can attend lsa if you wanted, but cannot major in mt (although there are music and theater related courses available for non majors.) in essence, the mt degree is like a professional degree, comparable to conservatories, and highly competitive nationally.

If you have any questions about how it all works, talk to the folks at the school of music.
Best wishes!

Ps just so you know, it’s very rare to get an admit to mt until well into spring and most of the final decision activity happens about three weeks after the LAST audition date, so be prepared for a bit of a wait.
