Hello everyone!

I applied to the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance for musical theatre at University of Michigan. For the musical theatre program there is a pre-screening video audition. I was asked after submitting my video to come audition in person. Are most people asked to come audition in person? Also, someone that I talked to at UMich said that when you are asked to come audition in person for musical theatre your grades already meet the requirement for UMich. Is this true? Please get back to me ASAP!!!!

The MT program for UMich has its own forum actually, and you can bet most of your questions can be answered there!

Just look under MT schools in the MT forum, and there is also a link to it under this main UMich forum at the top of the page.

Rskerchak, they would not audition you if you did not meet the academic cutoff. At the same time, grades might come into play later on in the process when they’re chosing among equally talented/strong candidates after considering talent first, needs of program second (eg we need a male tenor ;), and then general academic strength.

I believe the average number of applicants increased to nearly 700 applicants last year (could be wrong, but the year before it was at least 600) for the 18-20 spots (about equally divided among males and females), but that’s applicants, not those invited to audition, which I suspect would be considerably fewer.

You might ask the school of music how many students have been selected to audition. Remember that they see students at regionals in NY and LA as well, so you can’t just guestimate by adding up the number of audition dates ;)

PS Break a leg, as the saying goes ;)
