I know my SAT scores are low, but I was hoping my rank and GPA would kind of make up for it...and is the article about the top 5% of graduating seniors being auto admitted true?

<a href="http://news.ufl.edu/2002/02/13/allianceexpands/%5B/url%5D">http://news.ufl.edu/2002/02/13/allianceexpands/</a></p>

Thanks for your time.

this ****es me off
if you have a 3.8 at my school and you get less than a 1400 something's wrong.
gpa shouldn't matter
sat and extra curricular should be 100% of college admissions decisions.

I think you have a good shot.

Why not? Atleast it proves that Im not a slacker...but I may be a bad test taker. I think GPA should count more because it shows that even though you might not be intellectually gifted...you have determination and good work ethics....While a bad GPA and good SAT score only means you are a slacker that has hopes that he/she can get into college with intellectual talent alone.

And colleges are now realizing that SAT scores do not prove a freshmans first year of performance at colleges....just a fact.

P.S. Please dont post in threads if you have nothing constructive to add, just means you have nothing better to do but whine about your own faults in your free time.

banis

you are a true scholar, I deeply believe that you may be one of our greatest in this generation.. i love how you disregaurd the affects of:

Banis once again, please do not post if you have nothing to contribute but insults. Youre the one who came in here and complained about a system just because it doesnt work for YOU. How does proving that I didnt search for topics on a forum prove that Im a slacker academically? How does that even pertain to your arguement when they are clearly different issues. I also love how you insult my reading skills, on the account that I was not, 1) Born in the United States, and 2) English was not my first language. So what youre implying is that in all 4 years of my English classes, my teachers gave me As because they felt sorry for me for some reason, ALL 4 years? Right, instead of trying to prove other peoples flaws, try to do something constructive. Every one is different, no one has a set performance level wether on tests or during classes, please take that into consideration before you question my teachers credibility or my intellectual potential. No one can automatically do spectacular on standarized tests because they can make the grade in classes. Tests do not mean everything, every college professor or admissions officer knows that, Im just suprised that a "great scholar and mind" like yours cannot comprehend that.

I did not start this, so please refrain from posting anything else unless it either answers my question or gives more insight into the issue.

Jeffrey...Thats just unheard of....USF? Omg Lol. Everyone at my school considers that school a super safety lol. So I guess that article is wrong somehow? But I think the rule only applies to UF, as explained in the article, not USF. Thats weird...thanks for the heads up though lmao.

Most selective colleges in this country regard GPA as the most significant stat because it is a four year documented history of a student's performance in school. Large state schools seem most committed to GPA because they believe kids who consistently performed well in high school will do likewise in college, even if college is significantly more challenging.

The SAT suggests capacity and skill, but only over a four hour period. While also important, a high SAT score without a complimenting high GPA, suggests problems with work habits or maturity. High GPA and lower than expected SAT scores suggests a school hands out A's too easily or (as in your case Lansing) a language issue.

Unfortunately, UF is really crowded and in high demand right now. I worry that hard working students who struggle with SATs or bright kids that need a second chance to earn high grades might not be accepted. BTW, my kid is one of those with a low GPA and high SATs so I understand the frustration.

Still, you have a very good chance Lansing. Keep your fingers crossed and good luck!

UF's 2006 First Time in College Admissions Statistics:

Middle 50% of the Class

High School GPA of 3.9 - 4.4
SAT of 1220 - 1390
ACT of 26 - 31

Here is the facts: If you don't at least fall in the bottown 25% on the SAT range (1220) then your chances greatly diminish.

<a href="http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/frprofile.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/frprofile.html</a></p>

Lansing, I think you've got a good chance of getting in. According to the UF webpage that Ssobick included in his message, 31.5% of applicants who had SAT scores 1100-1190 were admitted, and you're high in that range. Even 20.6% of applicants with SAT scores below 990 got in!

83% of applicants with UF-calculated GPAs of 4.0 and above, got in. You've got a 4.26 UF-calculated GPA.

The webpage explains that UF uses a 'holistic' approach for admissions. They consider GPA, SATs, course load, and EC's. The 2006 admissions with low SATs must have had high GPA's (you), good EC's (you), and/or minority status (you).

You're a minority with a very interesting history (Hope you wrote about immigrating, learning English, etc.), your sister attends UF, you applied ED, and you're a Florida resident. I'd be surprised if you didn't get in.
Best of luck to you, Lansing.

g8trmom

How does UF calculate their gpa?

hey man don't worry bout ur low CR Sat scores. be sure to really emphensize how weren't born in the US and taht english isn't ur first language. that is... u didn't come here when u were like age 1-8 right?

cus then most colleges won't take that into consideration because if u came over that young, u should have easily caught up with ur english skills.

SAT should be just as important as GPA, simply because GPA is so ridiculously biased. At my school, teachers simply do not give out A's in certain classes. It is impossible. No, not improbable. Impossible. It is against their principles. So tell me it is fair that my class, whose average SAT score is 2100, deserves to suffer because other schools boost grades.

On the common app essay. I wrote about immigrating over to the US and the hardships of my parents and brother financially and socially. If anyone wants to read my essay Id be more than happy to send it.

Jeffrey...Thats just unheard of....USF? Omg Lol. Everyone at my school considers that school a super safety lol. So I guess that article is wrong somehow? But I think the rule only applies to UF, as explained in the article, not USF
lol

this is not an article.. it's real she's my friend ..2006 ..it's not made up either I will be delighted to even poat up her transcript.lol. it's funny that you think is funny b/c it's not funny...lol..yet it's funny because it's true. Im thinking that they're TRYING to become more prestigous or something.

But really it's real

I meant the article about the top 5% of graduating seniors are automatically admitted.

Pertaining to USF, its a pretty easy to get into. It just baffles me so much that she was rejected....

Lansing, my son is a freshman at UF this year, and we were never told of a program that guarantees admission to UF for the top 5% of students in Florida high schools. He didn't attend one of the five Alliance Project high schools, so it doesn't surprise me that I'd never heard of that program. But the article indicated that the guaranteed admission for the top 5% was something separate from the Alliance Project, and that it applied to all Florida high schools.

The article was written in February, 2002, and I was wondering if the program exists anymore, four years later. My son was #1 in his class, so you'd think his guidance councelor would have mentioned it to him, if there was such a program.

Just think, Lansing, all this anxiety will be over in about a week. My son got his congratulations e-mail on December 2nd, but that's a Saturday this year. Don't know if that means you'll hear on December 1st, or on Monday, December 4th??? UF wasn't specific last year. They just told him the decisions would come out "in early December". Best of luck to you!

g8trmom

g8trmom,

We are set to find out our decision on Friday, December 8th....a little less than 2 weeks. :)

1)banis although you did not directly call me a slacker, its obvious to anyone who can read that you did imply it.

"considering you're not a slacker, it would seem logical that the extra 12 seconds it took you to read my post wouldn't be a problem to you."

"since you're not a slacker, you may want to try "google.com" or even search this website before making an absolutely worthless post like this"

2) Once again, you imply that I must be bad at reading, or ponder why my SAT scores are so low compared to my GPA.

"I take back my comment that GPA should not be credited at all, but how is it possible that you can be that bad at reading yet still receive A's in english?"

3) You never proved my flaws, but you try to judge me just by my statistics, wether questioning my intellect or the credibility of my grades.

Give you a break? I was not the one who came into someone else's thread ranting about a set system is unfair.

"this ****es me off
if you have a 3.8 at my school and you get less than a 1400 something's wrong.
gpa shouldn't matter
sat and extra curricular should be 100% of college admissions decisions."

How am I the one being uptight when you are the one spamming in other peoples thread? :) And notice how I am only being this way to you because of how you acted before? I take all opinions into consideration, but you have no opinions, just ranting, insults, and sarcasm.

And about that 5% program....I called twice....once they told me that it was true as long as the applicants had no disciplinary programs....a few days later I called again to check and they said it only meant that you were garunteed into ONE of the public florida colleges, but thats suppose to be in the top 20 program, which gets me confused.

g8trmom, I just want this to be over with....Its just, what IF the rule isnt true and I recieve a rejection letter. Itd just break my heart, and then Id have to go to USF and live close to my parents....which is not a good thing. No offense to the parents out there :P Im gonna think positive!!! :D

Lansing, I just did a google search, and came up with a few websites that referenced UF's policy of guaranteeing admission to the top 5% of Florida graduates. Two of them were from 2002 and 2003, but one of them was from 2005, and it's from UF's own website! It's a page that gives details on the 2005 freshman class. I don't know if it still applies, but here's the page:

<a href="http://www.ir.ufl.edu/data/firstadmis.htm%5B/url%5D">www.ir.ufl.edu/data/firstadmis.htm</a></p>

If the page doesn't open up for you, here's what I googled: "University of Florida" "guarantees admission" "top 5%". I got 44 'hits', so this one won't be too hard to find. The sentence about the top 5% was a NOTE under the SAT scores for the 2005 class.

It would be amazing if it were true. Why don't you ask your guidance counselor about it when you return to school tomorrow?
g8trmom

so much anguer in this thread
