Chances at Northeastern? Will chance back.

11th grade

2330 SAT (800 CR, 800 M, 730 W) (1st time testing)
No SAT II scores yet
GPA: Not the US system (IB Middle Years Programme), earned 53 or 54/56 and 62/63 the last two years, expect 44/45 this year.
IB courses: English, Biology, Economics, Geography HL, self-taught History HL, French and Math SL

Extracurriculars:

Debate club (president, multiple awards in past two years)
Math tutoring club (president)
Student council (class rep for 2 years, co-president now)
Various academic awards on the school level
Second nationally in a history quiz competition (I attend school smaller European nation, so I don’t know how significant that would be)
Top 20% and top 35% at a pair of ISMTF math competitions
Doing some research for a major international organization
4 sports, but I’m not exceptional in any of them. A brown belt in judo is the extent of it.
Some piano/choir singing experience but, as with the sports, nothing spectacular

I’ve been thinking of Northeastern as a safety school, because I’ve heard that the school has a good political science program and is strong in economics. (2 of my 3 intended majors, the other being public policy) However, some people I’ve spoken to believe that would be shooting a bit low, even for a safety school.

I want my safeties to be schools that are about 75% certain. I’ve already got another uni as my slam-dunk, if-all-else-fails, option. If acceptance at Northeastern is 95% certain, that’s a bit low for me, even as a safety, and I’ll apply somewhere else. So would you guys say Northeastern is closer to 75% or 95% for an applicant with my profile?

You will get into Northeastern, just write a good Common App essay.

You will most certainly get into Northeastern, without a doubt.

I don’t know if it’s without a doubt! You’re a strong candidate and will likely get merit aid. But remember to write good essays and get good recommendations. Northeastern is a great school, and while it might be a safety for you, it’s definitely not “too low”.

If NU suspects that you are using them as a slam dunk safety, you may get waitlisted despite your stats. It has happened in past years.

You sound like you will def get in - you are very involved!! And your grades are amazing

If your essays are good, you’re in. Just make sure that it looks like it’s one of your top choices, or they might reject you, no matter what your stats are.
