Hello,
I plan to apply to Northwestern and Georgetown, and was wondering what my chances are.
GPA: 3.76
SAT (out of 1600): 1530
ACT: 34
Honors/AP classes: all classes
Extra Curriculars:
I play varsity tennis and soccer
I am in NHS
In my sophomore year, i created a yearly service project which raises hundreds of dollars towards hungry children
I am my debate team captain
Additional Notes:
My father is a legacy at Georgetown, and he was the saludictorian of his graduating class.
Thanks!!!
Your GPA might be a tad low for Georgetown. Do you have an SAT or ACT score? Also, for Georgetown you need three SAT IIs.
Your ECs don’t seem very competitive for top schools- I only really see two activities. Do you do anything else? The admissions process this year demonstrated that Georgetown wants to accept students who are people going about making positive change in their community. All my fellow admittees to the class of 2021 were very active in their community in some way.
You would think that I’d remember to put down my scores… oh well. My score on the new SAT was a 1500. I am varsity soccer, a debate team captain, play varsity tennis, and am on the scholastic scrimmage team. It’s crazy the things you forget to include…
Didn’t you say in your other thread that your SAT score is a 1500?
Hi all,
I plan to apply to Georgetown University in D.C. I was wondering what my chances of admission would be. I have a 3.7 GPA, have created a yearly service project that raises money for hungry children, I am in all Honors/AP, in the NHS, and am a legacy (my father was the saludictorian of his class). Thanks!!!
G’town and NU are both reaches for you. Your ECs are fairly basic and your GPA is low for these schools but still apply. You could try making up for this with a higher SAT score and SAT subject tests.
I think that NU will be tough as it is becoming a very hard admit. Your grades are a bit below what they usually look for. I disagree slightly, however, with some of the other posters regarding GU. Your grades are definitely on the low side, but your ACT score is fine, as the 75% percentile ACT is 34. (My daughter was admitted with an SAT score similar to yours but she had perfect grades). So, do not retake your ACT as you need to focus your time elsewhere to get into GU. I also think that your ECs are probably fine given that you are in two varsity sports. (IMHO, I just think that GU is less focused on ECs than the higher ranked schools are, so long as you have the grades) I would recommend the following:
-
Focus right now on your 3 SAT Subject tests and take them in Oct/November. Literature takes less study time than the others so you should consider that one.
-
Get your grades up and try and get all A’s next term. That will also help you get better recommendations from your teachers. You may want to hold off and apply RD as you will likely have a better application by Jan than Nov.
-
Get working on the GU application as soon as it opens (in August). Given your weak grades, you will need to write strong essays.
Good luck.
^ Also, if your do not live in the Boston-DC corridor, Cleveland, Texas or Chicago your chances might be a bit better as GU does like a geographically diverse student body.
Your gpa is a tad low, but being a legacy will help. How competitive is your high school? If it is well regarded that will help. Don’t think your dad’s salutatorian status will have any bearing, but if you do mention it in your app, make sure you spell it correctly!
Legacy tends to help more in EA then RD, if you can get your SAT 2 scores by EA deadline. You can call GU admissions to see when’s the latest you can take them for both deadlines. Any other hooks apart from legacy - URM, someone mentioned state of residence?
Definitely go for Georgetown since you are a legacy and have a very good chance at acceptance. Northwestern would be hard since they look carefully at ECs.
Regarding EA- at Georgetown it doesn’t really give a boost. The acceptance rate at EA is not much different than at RD.
Thanks for the the help everyone, and I made a mistake regarding the SATs, my bad. Georgetown would be my top pick, some say I will fit in, others no. What do you guys think?
