Chances at NotreDame MS in Accountancy? Please!

Do I even have a shot to get into their MS in Accountancy program?

I have a 3.42-3.44 GPA in my undergrad BS in Accounting program...but here's the kicker. I have gotten 2 C's (science courses) and I have one "W" on my transcript because I had to drop a class to get another part-time job because of family problems and needing to help out. I was still a full-time student that semester and got a 4.0 in my other classes. I had to withdrawal from the class I didn't really "need" and help out my family. It was before we even had any grades of any kind (no homework or exam at that point)..

I looked at Notre Dame's graduate school website. It said the average GPA of admits into the MSACCT program in 2005 and 2006 was 3.54. The avg GPA in 2007 was 3.52.

Is 3.42-3.44 way off the mark for ND? I still have a year to improve my GPA. What do you think the cutoff would be?

I know there are other things involved (GMATS, recs, extra cur.) but I wanted to know if I could even dream of getting into the program right now. Do the 2 C's and 1 W (even though I could definitely explain it) 100% kill my chances?

Sorry, I've been a Notre Dame dreamer for a long, long time.

As a transfer to ND, I know what it is like to be a ND dreamer. For what it is worth, I transferred to ND with a C on my record, so it happens but you still can do it. I would keep working on the GPA, but I definitely think you have a shot! It is going to be hard because, as you know, it is a very good program but if you have good GMATs and are close to a 3.5 you will have a chance. If they have a cutoff, I would guess it would be around 3.25. Good luck future accountant...my Dad hates that I studied Psychology instead of Accounting but what can you do :). Good luck!

Thanks very much for your reply. I really appreciate it. Even though you told me it's going to be really difficult, you didn't say impossible...so I still have a shred of hope. I'm going to try (even though it's going to be tough in acct classes) to get A's in all the remaining 41 credits I have. The 2 C's were in Science classes...ugh, general studies requirements.

The W, well, like I said it was a thing I HAD to do for my family.

3.44 overall is where I'm sitting right now, I think I calculated a 3.6 major GPA.

The overall GPA this year was for ND's MSACCT program was 3.52 with a 657 GMAT. Honestly, all I want to do is attend Notre Dame's graduate MS Accountancy program.

I have 41 credits left. So if I average out mostly A's with a few B's I should surely be able to rise to a 3.5+.

Man...I guess I can still keep the dream alive, but I know the 2 C's in the science classes don't look too hot.

I guess I just want to know that I have something to hope for, something to dream for; if I felt like I had no chance it would make the remainder of my undergrad experience...well, not as meaningful. Praying and believing I get in.

I really think that your average is worth a lot more than a few C's. C's can happen! If you are around the 3.52, I think you are in good shape there. Good luck!

Thanks very much; I really appreciate the positive feedback. People like you are what make Notre Dame so appealing.

You didn't diminish my hope that I can join you at ND in a little over a year; instead I feel like I have a glimmer of hope that it's possible.

Thanks again.

If anyone else has any positive/negative feedback, I'm all ears.

Thanks very much; I really appreciate the positive feedback. People like you are what make Notre Dame so appealing

^ your not the only one who feels that way

I have a question though......How many bus. majors matriculate from undergrad to grad at ND???/

Ive always wondered that

from what I have noticed with my friends, not all that many, but it is because they all are being offered VERY good jobs. With how highly ranked ND's undergraduate program is, unless you want to teach, there isn't really a need to go on in most cases.

isnt mendoza 3rd Nationally for undergrad????

Does that mean that is more difficult to get into Notre Dame is you desire to enter into Mendoza? Because I know that you cant transfer in....

I would assume it is.

I know that the M.S. in Accountancy program is ranked 4th in the country. 56% of the 2007 class are ND undergrads. So for this specific program there are a majority of ND undergrads. It's probably because of how many people they place at the "big four" accounting firms.

I'm going to work hard to get into Mendoza's grad program. I don't think the 3.44 is going to cut it right now, but I have time to raise it. Keepin' the dream alive.

Oh yeah, one last thing...would it help if I gave you my grades so far in school for each class to help make a determination? Sorry, as you can tell I'm one of those people that really wants to go there. It's so close to where I reside, so that's one of the reasons I grew up a ND fan/dreamer. I remember watching football games with my dad as a kid and it was one of the only times we really spent anytime together.

I never thought I had any shot getting into ND's M.S. in Accountancy program until I saw the average GPA's for the program a couple days ago. I realized it wasn't completely impossible.
Then a couple nice people on these forums said to keep the dream alive. When I realized I had a chance (even if it's 5%), all I want to do is get in! LOL, and I still have around 9 months before I'd even apply. :)

-----I remember watching football games with my dad as a kid and it was one of the only times we really spent anytime together-----

wow... exactly like me

I have a friend who is starting the MS program in accounting next semester and I bet he would be willing to talk with you, would you like me to get in touch with him? Perhaps talking with him could tell you more about your chances and what the program is like?

chillin till 08' - isn't that funny? I have a lot of great memories watching those games with him. We didn't really get to spend much time together but Notre Dame games gave us something to share. It's where I developed my love for the University.

irish68178 - I would LOVEEEE for you to do that for me. Maybe his stats if he is WILLING to share (GPA as undergrad and GMAT test score). Or what he has heard/thinks the low GPA cutoff is. Or just any info!

Ask him about the C's and my explainable W (tell him it was pretty much what I had to do for my family). 3.44 GPA right now; go to school in Indiana as undergrad, have the possibility to raise my GPA up above 3.5 which I'll work my tail off for because getting into ND would be worth every second studying.
Seriously, if you did that it would be tremendous man! Thanks for even thinking about it; I check the forums often (when I'm not at work).
Thanks again, you have been a lot of help.

Sorry, I have one more question which you may or may not know but thought maybe you could ask your friend.

The thing about the MSACCT program is that it's a year long.

Can you start it in the fall/or spring? Or does it only go from August (Fall)-May (Spring).

For example, could I enroll into the program in January 08 and finish December 08? Or would I have to wait until August 08 and finish in May 09?

Does that make any sense?

My friend is starting a semester early so I think you can do that. I will email him but would you also email me your email (you can find my email address by clicking on my user name and selecting email me, for some reason it is against board policy to post email addresses) and I will forward it on if he says he is willing to help. Thanks!

Thanks I sent you a PM.
