Well my biggest passion is Journalism - which helps - so I am applying to NU-Medill, I just wanted some opinions on my chances there!

Hooks: Dad is on Alumni Advisory Board (graduated from Kellogg), friends with Dean of Admissions

any opinions from current NU students or good guessers would be appreciated!

uhhh ... i'd say you're in.

umm maybe i should clarify- dad isnt like best friends fishing buddy with dean, but they know each other well, he set up a meeting with him for me...

is medill a lot tougher to get into than regular NU SAS?

Well, I won't have a great rec from my journalism teacher...I didn't even do journalism in HS.

You have similar stats to me. I have a slightly lower rank/GPA but higher SATs. And no journalism ECs. I think we're both in ;). Hope to be classmates...hehe.

haha yeah thatd be amazing!

NU only takes single sitting?

I just put that out there, its actually just my best overall because first time i took SATs i got

650 M 670 W 690 CR
and 2nd time
690 M 740 W 740 CR

so yeah i dont know...

anyone else have any opinions/familiarity with Medill?

you shouldn't send in your AP scores haha. everything else looks fine to me

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2035863#post2035863

Is it tough to get into? They take just around 100 people. yeah, its competitive. I don't think you're a lock by any stretch of the imagination but you are really competitive, and I'd feel pretty good if I were in your shoes. Good luck.

About the above post, I was exaggerating about the 100, its more like 150ish.

halopeno: it might be more a little more helpful if you knew OUT OF HOW MANY ;-) lol, 150/200 isnt bad, but if its more like 150/10,000 - YIKES

also, recently ive started to hear that going to J-school is kind of pointless...does anyone have any opinions on THAT?

It is at least several thousand applicants, I have a family friends who recently applied and got rejected. Anyway, it is never pointless to go to a school like Medill, unless you want to do something like Biomed Engineering. People don't necessarily go from J school to working for papers. They go to further education in communication, many to law school, and other areas of humanities. It does not force you to do anything. Plus, being the best J school in the country, people treat that with much respect when its own your resume.

I agree completely....so that does happen, right? people go from J-School (especially Medill) into Law grad schools? Halopeno you seem to really know your stuff, thanks

Nothing replaces college searching like the stuff you do on your own. I have just spent a ton of time visiting and researching colleges on the web. So I respectfully suggest that CC can only give so much information. If you wish to truly learn about a school, the website and a visit is much more solid than a discussion forum. But thanks for the shout-out!

Oh lol yeah dont get me wrong, I've grown up around NU...My dad went to Kellogg, and I've visited both NU and Medill specifically, and met with officials at both. I also know many people that go to NU and know the school very well through them too, so i've done my research lol. I could see how you might think i was trying to get info off of CC, but im more just cross-referencing what I know with the opinions of others, who presumably, like you, have done their research!

and youre welcome lol

If you are in Medill, you can easily double-major if you want since more than 2/3 of your classes (something like 33 classes) will not be in Medill. I believe that's the requirement. Many just use those credits to get a second major (usually in Weinberg). You may want to consider that if you wonder how people think of a journalism degree.

Mad props to the College Confidential users who do their own research! lol

^^^ is this a bump for me?
