I'm from Wisconsin and I've heard that it may be easier to get into East coast schools if you're from the midwest, don't know if this is true or not. Any responses would be appreciated!

You are most likely set up for a good shot at BU. NYU and Columbia are much more difficult (Columbia more than NYU.) However, be aware that some of these schools, depending on the school you’re applying to within it, may require additional SAT IIs. You can find that stuff out on their websites.

It is based on how many people apply to that one college in your area – not so much if you’re from the MW or not. For example, 50,000 students could apply to BU from NJ, and have a slimmer getting in than the 100 who applied from WI. More people, more choices, lower chances. The general happening is that most kids stick roughly around two states away from their home state, so kids that apply farther away do have a better shot because there are less applying from that location…

Yeah, the last sentence didn’t make any sense, but hopefully you understand the gist of it.

haha yeah i understand what you’re saying. I’ve looked into taking the SAT II’s that you’re talking about which aren’t parcitucarly popular around where I’m from. I figured Columbia would be a long shot but I’ll still probably apply to NYU. I know that they look for ec’s especially there and I wasn’t exactly Mr. Involved my freshman and sophomore but I think I’ll give it a shot. Thanks for the honesty!

Columbia seems like a major reach, but considering those 2 AP’s are your school’s most rigorous courseload (semi-assumption here) you seem pretty good stats-wise. You are also from an underrepresented state. However, your chances at Columbia are quite low. Better for NYU-- I would not be surprised at all if you get in at NYU and BU is a match/safety.

My school doesn’t give out class rank but I can figure out that I’m inbetween 10-15 out of 95, so decent but not spectacular. And yeah I’ll have taken 3 out of a possible 5 (realistically 4) APs by senior year. I’m hoping with a creative essay and good recs I can sneak into NYU. I’ve heard they’re a little stingy with scholarships though, so even if I got accepted I don’t know that I’d end up there.

BU is a match safety for pretty much anyone with a GPA higher than 3.5. i’ve seen a bunch of other threads and they seem to think BU is a reach for even a 4.3
Columbia is a high reach
NYU is a possible match. i’m just considering the fact that you’re applying out of state (it’s harder) and the 2 ap classes. otherwise, everything looks gold and NYU shouldn’t be a problem

Yeah thanks for the advice. NYU would be a really nice choice to have. I think I’ll apply there along with BU and some middle weight chicago schools (loyola, depaul, maybe northwestern?). Columbia sounds like a waste of $70.
