With all the people here thinking about applying for transfer, I thought I might post my question:

I am, right now, taking a leave of absence from Hofstra University on Long Island because I was invited to take classes and do research in my field at Georgia State University on a temporary basis.I will be applying to NYU as a junior transfer. I am applying to NYU's Gallatin School (individualized major, smallest school at NYU), Fordham's Individualized Major, and Barnard College for the Fall 2006 semester. At Hofstra, I was participating in a program that was similar to this (called New College), so I know what kind of responsibility it takes to create your own major.

My first transfer choice is NYU because of the Gallatin School and a serious thirst for diversity. My second is Fordham Lincoln Center because of the Individualized major, and my third is Barnard because, even though there is no individualized major, they have exactly what I want to study. You will notice that they are all in NYC, and there is a reason for that too (diversity is really important to me).

GPA and Curriculum:
So far, I have a 4.0 average and that will probably continue to be the case. I am enrolled in the Honors Program here at Georgia State, so my classes are challenging. At Hofstra, I was enrolled in New College (as stated above), so my classes were interdisciplinary.

Activities:
I am currently the Membership Coordinator for the Socology Club at GSU. We participate in ongoing community service projects (Habitat for Humanity, Hands On Atlanta...) and have "adopted" an elementary school in Atlanta where we tutor kids twice a week.

I have an research assistanship here at GSU. Only one student from each major gets the assistantship. I work 10 hours a week with a professor in my field.

I am also in what is called the Village Student Government, which is student government in the campus residence halls. I am secretary for the "visual committee", which is responsible for all content of the bulletin boards and display cases in the 4 residence halls we have here. I am responsible for communicating these issues to the Housing Office if needed.

I was Event Coordinator for my Residence Hall Council at Hofstra for both semesters, and I was involved in Hofstra's Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship.

High School Record:
I am not particularly proud of my high school record. I was involved and committed to several activities, including choir, drama club, and Christian fellowship all four years. My GPA was only a 3.1 at a really competitive public high school. My ACT was only a 27, and my SAT I is the most embarrasing score ever and my SAT II's are also embarrasing (writing 660, U.S. History 550, Literature 580). I only took 2 AP classes out of 18 that were offered (but the adcom will not know that because my school cannot send a profile because of Hurrican Katrina)

None of the colleges ask for high school activities, only college. My ACT score is not THAT bad (middle 50% is 28 at Barnard), but it's not good either, and retaking the test is not an option. In my freshman year of high school, my father was diagnosed with cancer and my sister with multiple sclerosis, so I had a really hard time focusing on anything else and my grades just really dropped. I will explain this to the admissions committee. I have a teacher from Hofstra that I have gotten to know very personally, so I have no doubt that I will have an outstanding teacher recommendation. I am working on my essays right now, so I think that will be great too.

Can anyone tell me what you think my chances are for junior transfer to NYU? What about Barnard or Fordham?
