Chances at NYU (Stern)

yo im a junior wanting to know his chances at the Stern School of Business at NYU. I've been told its a stretch, but i'm somewhat of an idealist hahaha

SAT: havent taken it yet but i can expect in the 2200's (i have taken many practice SAT's/ prepared hella). maybe in the low 2300's if i catch some luck. i tend to be stronger in verbal than in math.

Extracurricular:

-1st degree black belt in TKD (idk if this helps at all, my instructor said it would lol. i should have second degree by the end of senior year)
-Very active on the Debate team. CX captain for 2 years, 3rd at UIL state, qualified for the more prestigious TFA state 2 years in a row, qualified for nationals 2 years in a row. hopefully ill do at lot better next year (chances are i will)
-National Society of High School Scholars
-Attended National Youth Leadership Conference
-Participated in Kids Way, a program under United Way. Among other community activities, United Way gave us about 20000 dollars as grant money, and we would sit down in mini-groups and isolate specific problems that we percieve in society. we then would publish these results, and various charity organizations would apply/ present to us for grant money. we would examine these organizations and see which one(s) would provide the most efficacious solution to the problem(s) we had identified. i did this for 4 years, then the program got shut down
-part of the PACE internship program through my school. basically i get AP credit for choosing an internship to take up during the school year and fulfilling its obligations. im taking this class next year, but ive already recieved my admission letter (you have to apply to get in, its pretty prestigious). i intend to intern at some i-bank downtown.
-KUMON extracurricular math program. i officially finished algebra 1 related material by the fifth grade, and i have a bunch of other awards from this.
-I'm taking a High School Summer Scholars program at Wash U. St.L this summer, specifically a college course in economics (macro and micro).
-Toastmasters Public Speaking program, 2 yrs in a row.
-AIM for SEVA tsunami disaster relief fundraising.
-I started a youth group at my temple thats pretty baller. among other things, we hold debates, teach the younger kids sunday school stuff, and just generally do community activities. i intend to personally expand this program next year, and i personally have been teaching the younger kids at sunday school for over a year now.
-been in a private art school since 5th grade. haven't entered any competitions though.

AP Scores:
i havent taken any yet, but im like 99% sure that the ones i take this may will be all 5's with maybe one 4. im taking: US Hist, Chem, English (Lang), Comp Sci 2 (AB).

also, im damn good at writing essays. so if it comes down to my ability to write a good application essay, i can do that

*note: my grades were pretty much crap this semester, to state the obvious. it was due to a lack of foresight and certain study skills (in addition to my tendency to slack every now and then), though i dont see this being a problem for the first semester of my senior year, seeing as im taking classes i really really really like and ive kinda been given a wake up call haha.
*note 2: i looked at my transcript for the weighted GPA, though im not sure if my school weights it the way that its sposed to be. i'd be grateful if someone would tell me what the norm is for weighting
*note 3: in addition to my chances, im also looking for what kind of action i can take now in order to improve my chances.

Hella thanks in advance

I see you've posted in the chances forum as well. After reading your post, I constructed an excel spreadsheet on a whim to calculate GPA and project the highest possible from where you stand now. And assuming your grades don't budge this year (aka second semester grades are not a major improvement), it says your max is a 4.13W/3.35UW. Then again, it says your current GPA is a 3.84W/3.12UW, which is a tad lower than your official one. I can send it to you if you want to play with. Unfortunately for you, however, that 4.13 (4.24 by your official) is assuming all A's in all APs, which may or may not be too optimistic.

Obviously, your academic career won't be your strong point. Your extracurriculars, however, (and not to cast aspersions on your integrity) seem to be a little overloaded. Perhaps you're exaggerating, but the time commitment from all of them combined seems immense. You're going to have to list hours per week for each. I'd also like to know how you can plan on 5's and 1 4 on APs after those subpar first semester grades.

I'm by no means an admissions expert, but I'd consider having safeties in mind with an application this shaky. By the way, what are "PreAP" classes? I'm assuming they're honors?

lol wow dude, hella thanks for the number crunch :)

but yea, it turns out that i am actually taking all AP classes next year, so given that 4.24 (or 4.13? im not sure which one it is according to your figures, im confused), do you think i could stand a chance?

and i assure you my extracurriculars are legit. taekwondo ive been doing since 8th grade (i was in karate up till 6th i think, then i took a martial arts hiatus) and i do at least 2 hours a week of that. im stepping it up to 5 per week next year because im using it as a way to get out of a PE credit. art class is every saturday for 2 hrs, sometimes i do 4hr classes when i miss the previous one so the times should remain consistent. kidsway was 3hrs every wednesday for about 4 years. toastmasters was an hour and a half every tuesday for about 3 or so weeks (ill have to check the specifics). Kumon was also legit, idk the spec times but i could look those up if necessary. i kinda have to go atm lol.

on the subject of AP's, i think i will be able to vastly outperform my semester grades due to the fact that the grades arent necessarily reflective of my ability to comprehend the subject; that is, i got crappy grades cause i didnt study/ didnt do homework.

so best case scenario (4.13/4.24, 2300, good AP scores) do you think i could make it? what else would i need to reinforce/ compensate for my crappy GPA?

hella thanks again, i appreciate the help greatly :)

and yea, PreAP is like honors

Chances cannot be predicted by looking simply at your statistics. My advice is to follow instructions and your interests.

I must say though those Cs and Ds will definitely hurt you, especially the math course. Even it is honors, the admission officers would prefer an A for an honors course. The overall GPA is not the only thing admission officers look at. Also, your grades will be recalculate to a unweighted GPA.

I do not think anything before 9th grade will be considered since they are many years ago. Your most current activities are the most important.

Since you are applying to Stern, math is very important especially for finance majors.

Best of luck on your application to NYU Stern.

^ What he said. The low math score will hurt you the most. Although I don't believe NYU has a policy of recalculating GPAs (I could be wrong), and will accept your weighted as is. I said 4.13/4.24 because according to my GPA calculations you have a current GPA of 3.84, whereas your official one is +.11 of that at 3.95. Since my highest possible GPA calced was 4.13, I added .11 to that. But either way, you have to get that as high as possible. Keep in mind that your full year senior grades won't be summed up in that.

just show interest and do really well on you SATs
send in ur AP scores if they are really good
o yeah they require SAT 2s, make sure you get 700+

good luck

Chances are not looking great. Your school record is borderline average and gets progressively worse. Maybe the time you could've spent on school work was directed towards your EC's (which aren't too significant except for debate), but that shows you don't manage your time very well.

If your SAT score is good, then good. BUT it will show that you are clearly capable and you're just not trying hard enough at school.

I'm sorry if this was harsh. Go for Stern, but don't bank on an acceptance...What you need to do now is to get those grades up in school!

yea, im definitely going to work my butt off in school for the remainder of time left before applications.

also, someone told me on the application there was no place where you put AP scores. is this true? if so, does one still submit them somehow?

thanks for the advice guys! ill definitely shoot for it :)

lol, i was the one who told him that...i applied to Stern, and on the common app supplement, there was no space to list AP scores...i think you can send them on a separate piece of paper though, not sure if you can list them on the application

put it on your resume and send them in if they are good. if you got like 2s and 3s don't bother(do more harm than good)

You certainly can list them on the common app (not supplement), in the box below where you input your extracurriculars. It's sort of a catch-all, put anything you want box.

bump

any input would be greatly appreciated

ASURA, I hate to break it to you but im pretty sure you have a 3.14 GPA (weighted) counting your D's. You have a 3.71 with all your pre-Ap's counting as honor classes.

Also im pretty sure colleges look at your GPA past freshman year. Thats how we do it in Cali, maybe not on the east coast..

well it said it 3.95 on the transcript that the school gave me, and i think its highly improbable that i have something as low as a 3.14 (im assuming you're referring to unweighted here, it would take quite a tremendous screw up in order to achieve a 3.14 weighted) or for that matter a 3.71 gpa. odds are, you're using a different weighting system to calculate so the numbers are kinda off.

also, what do you mean by looking at GPA past freshman year?

seeing as a B is a 3.0uw, and with that many B's and a couple D's (1.0) and C's (2.0) this year, you may very well have a 3.14.

He means that the university of california schools don't look at freshmen gpa, but nyu does.
