Hey I'm from Utah and I'm interested in applying to New York University. What chances am I looking at?

ACT: 33 (36 English, 35 Math, 30 Reading, 29 Science, 11 Writing)
GPA: 3.21 (Unweighted)
AP Calculus AB: 5
AP Statistics: 5
AP Physics: 4

EC:
Symphonic Band (9-10)
NHS (12)
120 hours of religious based service (Yes, I'm a Mormon. Laugh at me.)
45 hours of volunteer work at local library
Mathematics Club (12)
Physics Club (12)

Only recently have I taken school seriously; my family has struggled to make ends meet since the 2008 financial crisis and I've lived with severe depression my whole life. Junior year I kicked things into gear and tapped into my academic potential. I raised my ACT score by 10 points and increased my GPA from a 1.75 to a 3.85 in a single term. I got straight As my senior year, including AP courses. {The standard deviation of my Grade Point Averages is .862; I literally got Cs for two years and As for the next two.}

In short, would it be a waste of $70 to apply there?

Any response would be much appreciated

You have a very good ACT so maybe they’ll be more lenient with your gpa…Are you taking a gap year? I ask since you mentioned that you got A’s your senior year. Also, if your parents don’t make much money, don’t expect NYU to give you good aid.

What I would do is write an amazing essay on why you got low grades for the first part of high school. Tell the admissions committee about the struggle. If your essay is superb and explains why things were so difficult, your huge improvement will also show how motivated you are. The short answer is: don’t rely on getting accepted, but you stand a chance! Good luck and I hope you get in!

Your ACT score is amazing. Just try to explain well about your GPA during the first half of high school. If you write a great essay you will be fine going to NYU. NYU’s a school known for its lack of financial aid, so be prepared for the high cost of attending there.

Please chance me back too! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1369526-chance-rising-junior-nyu-stern.html

Yeah I’m not expecting much financial aid. My grandparents said they’d give me a hand for the first few years, though. Thanks for the responses!!
