chances at NYU

hullo all.

Scores and stuff:

GPA: 3.7
College GPA: 3.8
ACT: 32
SAT: didn't take, whoops.

the only volunteer/extracurricular stuff i've got is working at a local soup kitchen, logging over 250 hours working for a garbage company, and participating in quiz bowl, varsity basketball, and intramural football.

also, i've heard that an upward trend in grades is a good thing; my grades since freshman year have steadily risen; 3.3 to 3.4 to 3.6 to 4.09 for my final year. i have only taken one AP class-- Lit-- and finished with a 99%. I took the AP test but have not received scores. I hope i get a five but i can't be certain.

i posted something similar to this about a month ago but nobody answered. here's hoping somebody answers this time!

Also, feel free to include other colleges that could potentially work out. thanks in advance

Decent applicant. What are you applying for, though? NYU is pretty serious about accepting students who show experience and passion for their chosen field. Those scattered EC’s aren’t too grand.
Also, what are you looking for in a school? You want the city life? The big-school vibe?
I’ve done a lot of research and visits to NYU and similar schools, so let me know and I’ll try to give you a few others to check out.

And if you can help me out at all, please do http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/956328-help-optimistic-but-lacking-gpa.html</a></p>

Always the biggest question for NYU: can you afford it? Unless you have something they really want, aid will be horrible.

Right, NYU will not be generous with their financial aid. Also, your test scores are average and, as mentioned, your ECs aren’t that great. That being said, you do have an upward trend and your GPA is pretty good. I think you have a shot. Good luck.

Chance back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/953055-please-chance.html</a></p>

not sure, exactly. I’m pretty interested in philosophy, and i’ve heard that NYU’s program for that is outstanding. I’d probably apply for that. Yeah, money would probably be an issue; however, i’ve heard that if you have 0 efc it’s worse than having substantial efc. Is that true? i’m not exactly well off. is 32 average for NYU though? i’m sure it is for an ivy, but NYU isn’t exactly ivy quality, right?

Do you want financial aid? If so, just don’t apply. Seriously, NYU gives horrible FA.

If FA isn’t a problem, by all means apply. Your ACT is good. Your EC’s are the weakness here: no leadership or major awards. You need to write strong essays that show passion and intellect. If you can do that, you’re likely to be admitted. Notice I said IF your essays are strong: with weak essays, the odds are slightly against you because of your sparse extracurriculars.

Good luck :D

Apply, but if you need aid just keep NYU in the background and focus on schools with good aid and those you can afford. NYU, in the end, is a school for students whose families can easily afford the $55K/yr cost and the huge expense on top of that for spending money.

Too many go into huge debt to attend. It’s not worth it.

thanks for all the help
