Chances at Oberlin ED? :)

Hello everyone!

Firstly, congratulations to all who have been accepted, and my sincere apologies to those who have not been.

Secondly, I'm probably about to hear from Oberlin via mail, but just for good measure, I'd really appreciate an evaluation of my chances of acceptance there.

My stats:

SAT I: 1430 total (760 V/670 M)
SAT II: 760 Writing, 700 Math IC, 610 on Biology E, I know there's no use for excuses, but I took it freshman year with no idea what I was doing, and I had a terrible teacher, and there was still score choice.
GPA: ~92.3 (total) ~94.58 (senior year so far)
I've taken 3 AP courses, and got a 4 on the AP US History Exam last year.

This year, I'm taking AP Psych (93 1st quarter) , and AP English (90), as well as French 5 (95), Precalc (90) Wind Ensemble (it's like the elite school concert band. 97) Chorale (audition-based school singing group. 91) Music Technology (99), and Gym (A-).

I'm demographically nothing too exciting: Caucasian Jewish Male from upper-middle class NY Suburbs.

I've got a good, creative essay, and I'd imagine good recommendations, as well.

I've visited the school twice, and I've loved it since I heard about it in 8th grade. My interview went well, and my interviewer, the associate dean of admissions, told me that I was perfect for the school, and the school was perfect for me, among other nice things. I just got a really good vibe from the school, the students, and everything.

Other school list:
-Wesleyan
-Vassar
-Brown (just for fun. Don't expect to get in one bit, but who knows? I've heard they're unpredictable sometimes)
-Bard (accepted already IDP)
-Bates (maybe. I had a great interview there)
-Bowdoin
-Carleton
-Macalester
-Cornell (I have 15 alumni there, including both parents)

Thanks so much!

Oh, I forgot something a little bit important.

In 11th grade, I founded the John Jay High School Saxophone quartet with 3 of my friends, and we got great responses from everyone.

That is all. :)

I really doubt they would turn you down.

Thanks so much. :)

Does anyone else have input?

ur in ...... good luck!

Likely, but not quite guaranteed, I'd say. What do you want to study?
Also, what do you think of Bard? I'm applying there RD, and am really excited about the new Conservatory of Music there.

Thanks everyone.
I'm glad to hear it.

fiddlefrog, I was thinking about studying European history, or philosophy or literature. Or, creating my own combination of the three, which I think would work out well at Oberlin.

That sounds like something Oberlin would smile on. Good luck to you.

Thanks very much.

I'm sorry, I forgot to answer your question about Bard.

Well, I liked Bard. I was extremely impressed with the seminar I attended during the IDP program, and the kids seemed really nice, although some had a little bit of an attitude (I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but a lot of students and prospective students seemed like the angsty misanthropic artist kids who think they'll change the world, and seemed pretty self-absorbed in a way. Just an observation.) The campus was pretty, with a strange but slightly endearing mix of architecture, like most colleges.

The conservatory is really exciting to me, as well; it actually regalvanized my interest in Bard. Although, they only expect 30 students for the first year, and only majors in a few disciplines. It will take a few years for them to expand their faculty and majors, and everything, which is understandable, but it's still a great resource, I bet.

I've heard some pretty weird things about Bard, though. I heard that it's not a very safe campus, and that the kids drink a lot, which doesn't bother me at all, and will be pervasive at any college campus, but they seem to drink in an irresponsible and/or destructive way. For instance, I heard from a student there that during the night of a drag dance, the local hospital in Red Hook had to actually close because it was filled with Bard students who had alcohol poisoning. So people who needed surgery or transplants, or other serious things had to go somewhere else. That was pretty upsetting to me. Also, the library is very small, and apparantly the history department could use improvements. But, I feel like Bard could be an incredible place for a lot of people.

I hope that helped. It's a good school!

Thanks.

Anyone else have any input, or nice things to say about the school? :)

Nice things about Oberlin, I mean! :P

Well, I actually have some not-so-nice things to say about Oberlin, but they're all about personal taste, and you clearly like it, so I won't bother you! Thanks for the info on Bard. That drinking thing is kind of discouraging to me-- I've grown up in a perpetually inebriated college town in Tennessee, and I'm tired of it. Oh, well. I still think I'll like Bard.
Keep floating.

hooray for jjhs people. i went to LES by the way. and you're totally into oberlin. when we were sitting in that thing the woman was really happy about the music thing. and im really jealous of the visiting random places, cuz ive only been to the virgin islands and canada, and thatz the farthest. hooray for caucasian jewish john jay kids. the end. michelle k.

I just wanted to add that Bard is a great school too! I am currently a student at Bard High School Early College in New York City, and I considered Bard very early on in my college search. It turns out that I chose Oberlin over Bard but I still have much love for Bard and BHSEC!
