Chances at Oberlin?

Hi i’m a mess of anxiety and nerves and i need someone to give me a reality check and tell me that I either have a shot or I need to stop dreaming.

I really love Oberlin and I really want to go. I didn’t sign up for Early Decision because I hate the entire practice (oooooo do I have a rant for that), so I’m doing the Regular Decision due on the 15th.

Okay, so I’m:

-African American female
-First of the family to go to college
-4.0 UW GPA/4.1224 W (weighted GPA is weird though because my school doesn’t count duel-enrollment as weighted ugh)
-valedictorian: 1/71 though
-Taken all the AP classes offered at my tiny, tiny school: AP Psych, World History, Calculus AB, and English Lang. I’ve literally taken advantage of everything I could, but you can’t fight what they offer ;-;.
-I’ve taken duel-enrollment class at the public uni. in my city: by the time I graduate high school I should have finished 6 college classes already (maintaining my 4.0)
-30 on the ACT
-404 hours of community service (tutoring, babysitting for neighbors free of charge, internship) logged with my school, many more unlogged.
-ECs: a paid summer internship with a medical college where I studied addictive drugs and their structure. A year with a protein modelling club (run by an engineering university), two years with a Girls’ Math and Science Academy with a college in my city, I organized a few community events, was in Advanced Band for a bit. I

I’m sorta dying though right now because I see all these really smart, sporty people with 32 ACTs and I’m here bare minimum for consideration ;-;.

-Before I transferred to my current school, I went to a bigger school that offered honors classes and degrees, in 9th grade I had more honor classes than not.
-I got a realllllly nice letter of rec from my science and math teachers and two from two different professors at the colleges that host the programs I’m in,

-I tutor people a lot, especially my little brother who had ADHD (he went from having an F to a B in a class, so proud lol)

I’m not an expert, but my cousin just graduated from Oberlin last year, and her resume wasn’t nearly as impressive as yours

I think you have a good shot. You don’t mention if you’re applying for aid, which can sometimes be a factor. Your ACT is decent but not stellar for Oberlin and your grades and other activities seem to be in line with my daughter and her friends who are current first years.

Good luck! I think you have a great chance of admission. You will love Oberlin! It’s a special place.

You’re in. I’m not sure what you’re worried about. Oberlin isn’t as competitive as, say, Stanford.

i agree. I think you have an excellent chance of getting in, and I know you will love it there.

You have a very strong chance of getting in. Assuming that they know all of the things that you put up above, they love letting people in who represent diversity, scholarship and first in a family to go to college.

You look like a strong student who is active in her community - just the kind of qualities that are valued at Oberlin!
