chances at ohio

Im a senior who really wants to attend ohio:
Im a black male 4rm TN and i attended the MENT pre-engineering program
I have a 3.2 unweighted GPA and I have taken AP US and im currently taking AP Bio and AP Calculus. My semester gpa has risen every semester since first semester freshman year. I am a national achievement semi-finalist. I was a 2 year regional finalsit in track and a state finalist in DECA. MY test scores are SAT: 700 Verbal, 640 math, 610 writing and ACT:(havent sent to Ohio U) 28 Eng, 27 Math, 30 reading and 33 science. Ohio University is my definite first choice and I would like to know my chances of getting in.

My daughter graduated from OU in June. Based on our experience w/ OU, I'd say your stats are excellent for OU. Are you interested in engineering as a major? There may be somewhat higher entrance requirements for engineering, but still I think you'd make it.

What goes on in the MENT program? How did you happen to come up to OU from TN?

I was actually living in IN at the time i went to OU but my parents recently split so now i live in TN for the moment. MENT is basicly a program that introduces you to engineering careers and what they do. I love OU and I really want to go there

Make sure you apply early, that way you'll know sooner since they are rolling.

Good luck!

OU does have a higher standard for engineering but you fall well within the standards. Acceptance for engineering at OU is a 25 ACT.

Engineering at OU is not their top department, a little small but I've heard nice things. It's beautiful in Athens, isn't it.

Athens is the *quintessential college town * - allowing the true spirit of the college to be an axiom on which college life is built. No crowded cities in the way, masking the identity of the university.

Ah, I notice the green letters there, wealthofinfo!

Engineeering may not be the top dept., but I was surprised to see how many students are in engineering at OU. . . until my daughter went there, I didn't even know they had engineering. I attended an engineering program at Goodyear for high schoolers with my middle daughter, and a couple of the young engineers from Goodyear were OU grads.

Journalism is regarded at the top dept. at OU. . . .It is the most competitive for admission, and applications for the j-school are due quite early in the application season.

terryetc:

Because of your SAT and ACT scores, you will have absolutely no trouble getting into OU. It's a stats-based process, but it's rolling admissions and some majors get "filled" before the normal deadlines. It's an easy app to fill out, and you'll get an answer back in about two weeks or so.

My son is at OU and I would recommend the place for anyone. I wrote a long report for the Provost - sort of "Why OU" from a parent's point of view. It's a great campus and the kids (pardon the expression, but I am a parent) make it the friendliest campus I ever saw.

But the major problem to me is the lack of diversity. Not just with race, but geographically as well. It seems like almost everyone there is caucasian and from Ohio (we're from Colorado). The state itself is more than 11% AfrAm, but OU is 3.6% (vs. OSU at almost 8%). This might be because of the location in Appalachia.

The work places of today are SO diverse, and I wish the campus environment were more so as well.

OU is trying to change some of this and there may be some opportunities that would be worth checking out.

Start with this link on multicultural recruitment: http://www.ohio.edu/admissions/multicultural/programs.cfm

Also, a composite score of 29 on the ACT will give you a small merit scholarship at OU as well, but there may be some other funds available to help them boost diversity. If I were you, I'd start investigating and getting on their radar screen. In my son's case (not a URM), once OU decided they wanted him, they really went after him. And all that attention came from an interview he scheduled with the department head of his intended major.

yeah ... i've already applied to Ou and my transcripts and scores were sent about a week and a half ago but i still havent heard back.. hopefully i will know in the next couple of days. I spent a few weeks at OU this summer for a URM recruitment engineering program. OU seems to have a problem with diversity but from what I have seen the students ar so accepting that this problem pretty much doesnt matter. Plus I've spent most of my life in suburban Indiana so I'm really not used to diversity. I fell in love with the town and the students that I hung out with immediately. Right now its only competition for my #1 choice is another ohio school (university of dayton). Thanks for all the information!!

please let us know when you hear back from OU.

It should be 6-8 weeks after the application is considered complete

6-8 weeks.... the site says 3-4... i cant wait 6 to 8

6-8 is the max and 3-4 is the minimum I believe - or at least that is how I understood it.

Hey!!! Thanks everyone I just got accepted to OU!!!

I told you you would... good luck. The people there seem incredibly friendly.
