Essays: (i kind of integrated the 4 topics below into my two essays)
1. when i was a freshman my parents got in an accident and i had to start taking care of my whole family. what i mean is that my chores got tripled, i needed to help my parents move through the house, and i had to walk my bro to school before i went. My school and his school are in 2 opposte directions.
2. i also wrote about how the envioronment i grew up in has shaped me to be a strong perservering leader and how people see me as a leader not because of my large frame ( i am 6'4) but because of the attidude i have when i am in the room.
3. how my parents accident coupled with my volunteering at the hospital and retirement has changed my outlook on life and how i found my true calling which is medicine because God has blessed me with intelligence and lots of empathy towards the needy and weak.
4. i also included in my essay a great quote from one of a famous surgeon (i am drawing a blank on his name right now) but it said " i was never the smartest in med school, but what i lacked in ability i made up with through discipline." i think this quote really applies to me and i explained why.

My Grade progression is high school. This only shows core classes and Spanish 1,2,3, health, and geography all GPA is UC Scale but the Gpa at the beginning of my thread is just 10+11th grade

freshman year- 2 A's, 8 B's (3 honors courses)= 3.2/3.2
sopomore year- 3 A's, 6 B's, 1 C (3 honors courses)= 3.2/3.2
junior year- 8 A's, 4 B's, 2 C's (4 AP and 1 honors)= 3.66/4.00

what sucks is that all the honors classes i took freshman and sopomore year hurt me not help me because none of them are UC approved Ex. Algebra 2H, English 2H,...etc

Your EC’s are impressive and since you are in state, you should have a better chance at UCD. Keep your grades up and try not to get any C’s and you should be fine. Also, your story is a very good one and I don’t know if it will help you or not as I am not a UC rep, but it definitely adds some character to you. You should be able to get in.

You look like you’re a solid match. Try to improve your GPA if possible. That’s probably the one thing that would potentially hurt you.

the academics made you a match, the ecs made you “IN”.

yay!

yeah, just keep up your grades

you’ll be fine ! : )

at least, that’s what I really think!

just a heads up if worst coms to worst, it’s VERY easy to get in by transferring from a CC, and far cheaper too. do 60 units, IGETS and the prereqs off assist.org and you’re in basically. with lots of APs and some summer courses, you can transfer in one year.

otherwise, you’re in.

xelink: sorry but i just cant see myself at a JC i will definately go to a four year university but UC Davis is my number 1

bump 10char

additional advice. It’s harder to transfer from a CSU or a private.
transferring from a UC to a UC isn’t too bad either.
if the worst happens and you’re not accepted at Davis, there ARE other ways to get in, and this site has a great transfer section.

Both my father and my uncle went to a CC and consider the education they got there superior to that of Cal Poly SLO and UCI(respectively). That said if it’s a matter of pride, ehh can’t say I’m any better, I was horrendously embarrassed to go to a CC. I was the genius, I was the smartest kid in my class(of 300) in HS, or at the very least close to. I was ashamed. That said, I’ve been accepted to every UC that I applied to and will be going to Irvine which is generally a little harder to get into than Davis. Hope you get in man.

Other thing that I’ll recommend… COURSE PLANNING. It might take a few days, but get intimate with UCD’s course catalog. know what classes you need and what classes you need to take as prereqs. Then research all the easy profs and courses. The time spent researching might be a ***** but it’ll be paid back tenfold.

xelink: the funny thing is i have planned out all my courses for my years at uc davis all i need to do know it to get accepted:) i just hope i get accepted.

Like stated above, your GPA might hurt you. The average GPA for a freshmen to get into a UC is higher then your GPA currently (correct me if I wrong please). Keep in mind that UC’s don’t take a lot of consideration in regards to admission when dealing with EC’s and personal statements; they would rather see a higher GPA and higher SAT scores (especially from a premed).

I totally agree with xelink. Realistically there is a chance you won’t get accepted in UC Davis. IF you were to attend a CC it would be so much easier to transfer and you will save a lot of money (all you need is a 3.0 to sign their TAG - transfer admission guarantee). Not to mention the classes you will be taking the first two years while premed are almost always easier at a CC which will make it easier to get really good grades (which you will need as medical schools look at all classes including your general and organic chemistry, biology, and calculus). Medical schools do not frown if you attend a CC as long as you’re grades are good.

The average undergraduate GPA for a good medical school (UCLA, UCSF, Washington…) is around a 3.80 and most of those guys will have transcripts that look very similar to yours or even better (I think UC Davis’s med school average GPA is 3.6). It wouldn’t be a bad idea if you capitalized on a rejection (hopefully that not the case) by attending a CC.

PS. Otolarynology is extremely competitive and you’re going to need a very high GPA and very high MCAT scores to get into a good med school. Then you’re going to need to excel in med school to get into a really good residency program (check out UCLA’s ENT surgery). Not to intimidate you in any way but you’re looking at approximately 14 years of school before you reach this feat.

I wouldn’t say that the classes are easier at a CC. Just that the grading scale is dumbed down. There’s a difference between a nicely adjusted scale and a hard course. Never hurts to have grade inflation working in your favor either. 4.0 from a CC averaged with a 3.6 at UCD can be recorded as a 3.8 on a job application. Admittedly, graduate schools mostly just look at your last 60 units so you DEFINITELY need to make those count.

lmendoza and xelink: i know everything you guys just posted 3.8gpa for medical school, 35+ mcat for top schools, leadership, research, shadow, volunteer…etc. you dont have to tell me anymore i already know it all.

You have a good chance…history is not the hardest major to get into but i’m not sure how easy it is to change your major at Davis, you might want to look into that…i’d say you fot a 70-75% chance of getting in

I would say you are most likely in. I would just bring that ACT up to a 31 (equivalent of around 2100 on the SAT) to seal the deal.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/909649-chance-ivies-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

jebar: its funny you said exactly what my counselor said about getting my ACT to 31

Haha, wow. I kind of meant it as a minimum to seal the deal, because as far I know UC Davis doesn’t have very high SAT or ACT scores (middle 50% has a SAT score between 1600 and 1900, and a ACT score of 22-28).

actually based on fall 2009 admissions the middle 50% ACT is 25-31 and GPA is 3.85-4.21. Do you still think i have a good chance based on this?
