Essays: (i kind of integrated the 4 topics below into my two essays)
1. when i was a freshman my parents got in an accident and i had to start taking care of my whole family. what i mean is that my chores got tripled, i needed to help my parents move through the house, and i had to walk my bro to school before i went. My school and his school are in 2 opposte directions.
2. i also wrote about how the envioronment i grew up in has shaped me to be a strong perservering leader and how people see me as a leader not because of my large frame ( i am 6'4) but because of the attidude i have when i am in the room.
3. how my parents accident coupled with my volunteering at the hospital and retirement has changed my outlook on life and how i found my true calling which is medicine because God has blessed me with intelligence and lots of empathy towards the needy and weak.
4. i also included in my essay a great quote from one of a famous surgeon (i am drawing a blank on his name right now) but it said " i was never the smartest in med school, but what i lacked in ability i made up with through discipline." i think this quote really applies to me and i explained why.

My Grade progression in high school. This only shows A-G Classes

freshman year- 3 A's, 8 B's (3 honors courses)
sopomore year- 3 A's, 6 B's, 1 C (3 honors courses)
junior year- 7 A's, 5 B's, 2 C's (4 AP and 1 honors)

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS IS THE GRADE PRGRESSION UC DAVIS IS LOOKING FOR?

what sucks is that all the honors classes i took freshman and sopomore year hurt me not help me because none of them are UC approved Ex. Algebra 2H, English 2H,...etc

I won’t pretend to know much about this stuff, but you asked me to in my thread and from the little I knew/gathered, you seem like you have a solid shot.

You seem pretty well-rounded. Like you, my grades are a tad on the low side, but you seem to have a lot of good ECs to balance it all out.

Using my school’s naviance as a reference, your ACT is spot on if not better but your GPA is a little low. Looking over your courses it is obvious that they are rigorous, and your ECs are abundant.

You should be in; your ECs and course selection make up for a little below average GPA.

should have a decent chance since you have those extra cirricular achievements and clubs and sports and your grades aren’t that bad :)

ixyzyxi; actually my GPA is kinda bad because i have a 3.5 UC GPA (its a special weighted GPA that CA public schools use, it only count up to 8 semester of honors classes which kinda screwed me over) and UC Davis average is a 4.02 GPA and 1900 SAT

I think getting your GPA up should be one of your biggest goals because that’s what UC’s look for first.

jubilee27: i just cant there is no other way because junior year is about to end and i messed up Sopomore year. the only thing i can improve is my ACT but do i need to? everyone is telling me a 31 is great

Oh hm, I would maybe advise you take AP Gov. If you don’t want to, it’s no biggie. You should be fine. :)

You clearly are doing your best to get your GPA up and your ACT was excellent. I won’t pretend to know much about California schools but, I think you’ve got a shot. Good luck! It sounds like you’ve got an amazing story to tell.

well i live in the los angeles area and one of my friends got in with like a 1900 on his sat’s. i dont know whether or not you live in CA but if u get that GPA up i think it can definitely be a low reach to a high match. honestly i think UC’s are pretty formulaic with their application process because of the sheer number of applicants so make sure you can raise those stats (duh)

also what kind of awesome high school has a marine biology class?

well first of all candidsquire i do live in california so that does give me the instate advantage. second of all, i pretty sure marine bio is a pretty common elective science class. atleast it is in my district

jubilee: i cannot take AP Gov. because as i mentioned my school is low achieving so i dosent offer a very elective course choice. 1 semester of gov. and 1 semester of econ are req. to graduate

hey ENT how many chance threads are u gonna make?

IN @ davis.

I reported the person above me –> gkefjeng
It was pretty rude and racist if you read it.

Anyways, I’m from So-Cal and I personally know a lot of UC Davis applicants-acceptances and rejections. I think you have a good shot but you DEFINITELY need to boost that GPA, 3.5 for a UC GPA is really low  work hard senior year and appeal!

@CandidSquire haha, my school has a marine bio too, it’s not too great x]

christytran: beside GPA which i know is bad what else can i do to better my chances? i mean people tell me “31 on ACT is good, dont retake” how about my subject tests?

bump 10 char

Actually, I think you have a pretty good shot. Trust me, not everyone who goes to UCD has a GPA above 4.0. It also has what, like around a 50% acceptance rate. I’m sure you’ll be fine.

actually it has a 44.5% acceptance rate down from 46% in 2009. SAT went from 1887 in 2009 to 1902 in 2010

bump 10char
